For example, Gajeel is easily weaker than many members of Sabertooth and Mirajane, but he was the only one able to fight Reaper because of his iron lungs. The others would have died by just being near him.
Natsu, Gajeel, and Wendy were geared up to fight Azir, but since he was on his airship they had an automatic disadvantage. They switched with Erza, who had a disadvantage against Azir despite how strong she is throughout the series. All she could do was survive his attacks until Bisca could blast him with a giant cannon meant for wiping out fleets, then get in the last hit.
I'm not saying the power levels are non-existent, but you can't just ignore the rock-paper-scissors aspect.

He kills her, but that is no problem to her, because Erza is actually somekind of fail safe for case of sudden death.
She will basically be in Erza and stronger than before since she gets Erza's power added to herself.
She will be amidst the faries and comment on something like having underestimating him and that it will not happen again.
She will crush a lot of the faries, while all the while we will see Erza in somekind of inner world complaining to her that she has to stop.
Erza will at some point will herself back and over take Eileen/Irene and gain her power.
