Yeah, at first it was supposed to be about the dog (And she didn't even approach him even though some time passed between that and the start of the series). That's why we had 8man's monologue about nice girls and her affection being pity, but we already got over it.
IIRC, in the festival scene where she was about to confess she said "Even if we met in any other way, i would have... For you..." or something like that, implying she would love him regardless of the previous circumstances.
I think we've had enough interaction and development to accept that even if Yui's preliminar crush was due to 8man saving her dog, she actually fell for him after she got to know him, so her love is genuine.

It's consistent with how Haruno acts within the main story really, she's trying to get that stick out of Yukino's ass but she's going in too hard and possibly doesn't realize how much of a cunt she's being. Despite that it's sorta hard not to root for her when she's trying to pressure Hachiman to stop pussyfooting around with Yukino I guess, since that part of the story has dragged on for ages and is not fun at all to slog through. It'd be fine but for the fact that it's at the core of the entire fucking story and everything that happens in it.

I also watched commie subs when it first got out, but I rewatched it recently with HorribleSubs and they used "real thing".
It fits much better, "genuine" sounded kinda... depressing, I dunno, maybe way out the way of a high schooler's thinking.
But well, rewatching it made a bit more sense, since he thinks all relationships are sorta fake (not real), like when he uses Hayama's group as example, then that means he wants something "real", not those shallow relationships.
