S2's hatred is unwarranted. People just got tired of the show and the focus on the brother characters. It was thematically consistent since it was a show about the girls first and the mecha second, which is why people who came for the mecha got disappointed.
I still liked S1 better because shit was fresher then and Maru didn't seem as annoying.
