What was the best anime released in 2004?

http://www.strawpoll.me/10470443
>>
>>142795522
Jesus, 2004 was a busy year for basically nothing but shit anime.

Desert Punk takes my vote, albeit reluctantly.

Inb4 casual Champloofags votebombing their overrated and overhyped mainstream nostalgia.
>>
My vote is for Gankutsuou purely because manga was the better medium to tell the story of Monster.
>>
>>142796012
Agreed actually, and Gankutsuou really took advantage of the medium to retell such a famous story in a unique way. It's impressive.

I like Monster more than it, but just the manga.

Could we please have year polls for 1985-1993, before mainstreaming polluted taste worldwide and gave birth to the mind-numbed abominations that inhabit the fandom now?
>>

Its not surprising at all that the most entry level anime are winning popularity polls

You realize that those things are generally popular outside of the Toonami crowd, right? Bebop and FMA were the best-selling TV anime of their years in Japan, SAC was the third-best-selling in both its years, and Spirited Away is fucking Spirited Away.

Not to mention all the decent things that are as good or better than a bunch of your worse picks. Every single one of these polls has had terrible selections, OP. You're awful at this.
>>
>>142798251
He also included Diebuster and Innocence despite the (already-retarded and pointless) no sequels rule.
>>
>>142798251
Cut him some slack, there were 115 anime series aired in 2004, not even including OAVs and movies.
>>
>>142797629
You can't be this dense. No one would know about any of those if they hadn't aired on US television, which only credits my point that if you removed shows that aired on US television, then the poll results would be drastically different. Bebop, FMA, etc would be irrelevant if they'd never shown up in a US timeslot for the purposes of these polls.
>>
>>142796511
Now redo the polls featuring the top five anime and you'll get a much different result without 60% of the votes missing. All you're doing is polling who has the biggest vocal minority, not who we collectively agree on.
>>
>>142798425
Yes, no one on /a/ would know about the best-selling TV anime of their year, or about the fucking best-selling movie in all of Japanese history, if they hadn't been on TV in the US over a decade ago. That's right, that makes total sense.

Is 199 because of "muh sequels"? Because OP has specifically said that he's allowing sequels, just not new seasons, so if you disagree with that then you should redo almost every poll since there were probably potential candidates that were exclued from all of them because of that dumb rule.

Dumb shit like Desert Punk doesn't deserve to be there but Shinobuden/Ninja Nonsense was just as important to forming my anime taste as Mind Game and Dead Leaves.

It's a fucking fantastic comedy and I think you're judging it too much based purely on the fact that it's an otaku series with cute girls. It has great comedic visuals and timing and I couldn't imagine UfoTable making something like it today.

Also the cute girl designs have more understanding of anime's roots and what makes big-eyed cutesy designs appealing than most anime

To say "Norio Wakamoto is great in it" would be pointless since everyone already knows that

Basically the show kicks ass
>>
>>142805917
Maybe I'm remembering it wrong but from what I recall Genshiken was just a pretty good manga adaptation and didn't do anything special to take advantage of being animation in the way that Shinobuden, Dead Leaves, Mind Game, Champloo, Diebuster, Paranoia Agent etc did.

Honestly Monster is kinda the same though I remember liking its direction more than Genshiken's.

Regardless 2004 was a great year and people like >>142795752 should choke on a shotgun barrel
>>
>>142805799
No, nigger, I'm judging it based on the fact that no one cares about it and that shit like Mind Game is talked about and praised much more. Because OP just said that how likely something is to get voted for is all that matters for the selections.
>>
>>142796511
>Ghost in the Shit and Azufaga Daioh over Haibane
/a/ has serious cancerous taste, but this is just too much.
>>
>>142806083
I don't see Mind Game praised that much to be honest, people rarely list it as their favorite Yuasa anime these days; they used to in like 2008-09 but ever since Tatami came out people always rate it pretty low. It's my personal favorite by far but it's not writing-centric and thus hard for the type of /a/ posters who watch Yuasa anime to decide what to think of it.

Barely any fans of stuff like Panty & Stocking and Gurren Lagann watched Dead Leaves because it doesn't have the same "fandom" appeal.

Miyazaki wasn't even trying with Howl.
>>
>>142806588

>>
>>142806621
Steamboy is beautifully animated and has some great action sequences, but the latter half of the film drags the fuck on and the script is dog shit.

Howl's Moving Castle sort of has the same problem. The first half is classic Miyazaki in a good way, but he had no idea what the fuck he was doing in the latter half.

On balance, Howl's is a bit better but hugely disappointing by Miyazaki's standard up until that point.

I kinda regret being 100% honest and voting for the one I had the most fun with from the list (Diebuster) because Beck deserves more votes.

It's the kind of show that showed what Kobayashi is actually good at, i.e. down-to-earth stylized urban life instead of stylish action like Gurren Lagann and Kemonozume. Paradise Kiss was similarly good.

I think Champloo is more fun than Bebop; looser visuals, characters more likable.

It's objectively inferior. It's nowhere near the same level of effort in the production. At every turn it feels like a cheap knockoff.

You just don't understand, man. You're, like, the cancer killing anime. Champloo is totally babby's first mainstream entry level Chinese cartoon. Also Toonami raped my childhood.

Bebop has less rushed-looking moments visually but I prefer Champloo's style more. Bebop is a bit too held back by its style in my opinion.

True, even though it's actually 4th best Gainax
>>142795752
Monster, Gankutsuou, Diebuster, Champloo and Paranoia Agent also some good comedies like Genshiken and School rumbple. Maybe you should watch more.
>>
>>142798251
Yeah, the fact that it's missing Mind Game is just ridiculous.
>>
>>142809135
Why the hell woud you say no? Why the hell not include two debuts by some of the most popular directors in the industry?
>>
>>142809135
Yes. I will still pick monster over mindgame, but considering how much literal trash is on the list those two deserve to be on it.

By the way isn't gits a sequel? If EoE counts as a sequel why doesn't innocence?

Innocence is in the poll though.

I think the 1997 poll is being redone too.
>>
>>142803741
>>142795522

Please, next time you make a poll, refer to ANN's list of the year in which ratings are weighted to popularity. It's an objective way to get an idea about what's popularly accepted as being good among western fans.

1999 list is fine, nothing of value was ignored. Stop confusing the issue over your muh taste.

>>142810354
It's not a sequel in a chronological/narrative sense. It's more of a stand-alone from a vast franchise, like lupins and gundams.
Here's how it should be considered :
Can you watch Innocence without GITS 95 ? Yes
Can EoE and Utena movies be seen without the series? No.
>>
>>142810893
>nothing of value was ignored
I withdraw that.
Takahata's Tonari no Yamada-kun is missing to give room to Kakyuusei, Corrector Yui and Monster Rancher. It looks ridiculous but I wouldn't say it has to redone either.
