Sinbad comes across as a self entitled character. Someone posted a page from the Sinbad side story that prompted me to start reading it. But I jumped in around chapter 58 where the princess and her retinue were picked up by his company. I still don't know the full context but from her story it seemed like when her country had been invaded Sinbad didn't heed the call for aid and in teh resulting year he built up his company while she spent it on the run. When she vents to him he everyone chides her for being mad and how she should be grateful to him.
Stuff like that borders on Mary Sue territory because it was clear that he was in the wrong to some degree but there wasn't any kickback to his actions or behavior. Instead he never really answers to the princess and even after his kick as a slave people still don't talk about it.
He's charasmatic and competent but Alladin was right, people tend to get swept up in his pace.

It's not like this anime doesn't take from other cultures altogether. There's are chinese, roman, and arabic locations and cultures. Red hair is commonly associated with the celtic and nordic cultures, they are in northern europe and scandanavia.
