With that being said, 2.22 is one of my favorite films period and honestly one of the best anime films if you look at it AS ITS OWN THING. You'll see from this thread many eva fans are incapable of doing so.

So a poorly directed, poorly structured splosh of nonsensical plot points with terrible character art/animation, shitty CG fights with overdone composite that obscure any trace of good animation and characters on the level of Infinite Stratos?
It's not like you can look at it as its own thing anyway. It's part of a continuity which itself started as a 1:1 remake of an older property. It necessarily invites comparison. It can't stand as its own thing. This is made clear by how they bend over backwards to retread all the key parts of the TV series despite that structure not being well-suited for a feature film.

I like Rebuild in that 2.0 was essentially for that guy that said Shinji is a bitch. It's a companion piece that addresses a very common complain about the series. and then 3.0 explains why turning into Gurren Lagann doesn't actually solve your problems either. Just as you can't run away from your problems, you can't bash your head into a brick wall and make things work either.
Also some minor things are neat in how they call back or relate to the anime.
Like Shinji's tantrum after the Eva 03 incident seems to be reminiscent of the sandbox scene. Also how the Piano makes such a good contrast to Shinji's Cello experience.
But yes it is not anywhere near as good as the television anime.
I may just be biased though as it's nice to have some mystery still as to what is going on.Especially with Mari who figuratively seems to be the representation of fans intervening in the series, and story wiseI still think is working for Gendo's plan

I think that in the context of the over all series, 2.0 showed that no matter how much we attempt to become better people, that we're all doomed to failure. At the end of the day, you're the same person you started out as, and trying to grow beyond that is futile. It's better to accept yourself as who you are rather than trying to change and inevitably failing. It's a very nihilistic, but powerful message from Anno.

1.0 is pretty much a recap with a higher budget and some triming.
2.0 was fun in its own way and had a lot of really interesting plot stuff happening
3.0 threw all the potential 2.0 had out the window and was mediocre at best
3.0 has made me dislike 2.0 because all the mystery and speculation it had that made it interesting was made into shit by 3.0.
Now we wait for 4.0 to redeem (not likely) the rebuilds or continue being trash in comparison to NGE.
