It was silly in the first place, but the entire script was rewritten to be even sillier. The characters lean heavily into the fact that it's a dub of a Japanese show they couldn't edit the Japanese out of, and the narrator actually becomes his own character constantly talking to everyone else, instead of being a stock-standard one.

Yes? I did. The dub is much more memorable no doubt, but for some reason dubfags like to paint the original as if it was completely unwatchable (even though they have not watched it).
It's just a kid's show. Adding jokes won't suddenly make a completely different show, the only differences are the kids personalities and the mom's letter which changes the tone of that episode.
There are a couple of retarded episodes and shit animation but it's not enough to make it the worst show ever. The hentai character design, panty shots and the top tier OP, ED and ost make up for it anyway.

Of course you are going to find it boring if you have already watched the gag dub. Not only you'd be expecting or remembering the jokes, you already know how the episode plays out and how the kids defeat the ghosts, which removes any tension. It's the same as rewatching an horror movie but now also expecting it to be comedy.
And again it's still a children's show, trying to scare its children audience. That still doesn't make it the legendary unwatchable garbage people like to parrot it is when explaining the reason for gag dub. The show is ok if you watch it before the dub.

I don't see the point of bashing the original just to justify the dub and I'm pointing out that people somehow like to parrot without proof of the contrary that the original was impossibly bad or a complete failure while admiting to not have watched it, just because someone said so in a previous thread.
People on ghost stories threads have gone from claiming that the creators didn't care so they allowed a gag dub, to the show was unsuccseful so they allowed it, to the show bombed hard and the studio went bankrupt so they begged for whatever means to save it, to the show was complete irremediable trash so the dub had to rewrite it to save it, to a guy in the last thread claiming that the japs that made it actually preffer the dub, to a guy wondering if its possible that someone in the world could actually enjoy the original, as if this was somehow impossible to watch.
I really don't get what about this series makes people believe and spread misinformation so easily. The original is average, one episode was banned, it got decent ratings (mostly because of a good time slot), it got cancelled (and also got a shit second season of shorts that no one saw), they allowed a gag dub that is 100% deserving to be quoted and the nips made an unexpected amount of porn of it.

Then why was it cancelled? Why is there next to no merchandise? I highly doubt it was planned to run only 12 episodes given that the premise was to teach kids about Japanese ghost tales with the ending being as abrupt as it was. Not denying that 10-12 are good ratings (in fact too good since those are Saznae-san numbers nowadays) but it seems odd that a "popular" show would get next to no attention in its country of origin.

Yes they are though ratings standards has changed a lot since then so maybe it was deemed not good enough back then when its phenomenal now. It's a kids show animated by Pierrot so unless it aired on a Government sponsored channel it seems weird that there isn't any merch for it.

Pretty sure all that is bull. The OFFICIAL story from ADV is that they had gotten Ghost Stories as a package deal and were sitting on the license for years, this happened before when they got Papuwa in a package deal with Square Enix when they licensed Final Fantasy Unlimited, and since they were smart enough to see that a early 00s mediocre kids show was never gonna sell they had fun with it. Funimation did the same thing when they licensed Shin-chan.
