but I've met NUMEROUS people in my life who act like driving manual is rocket science. They just have no clue how to drive it, or the idea of of 'Durrr I can't just press hard on gas go fast' is completely foreign to them

Manual being mandatory would force them off the road

Mine told me I shouldn't use the mirrors when reversing, but rather turn my head around. I mean that's a fucking stupid thing to teach a student -- at some point you'll drive a vehicle where you can't look back and have to use the mirrors -- but they don't teach you that because it's the "best" method. They teach it because the point on a driving school to not to teach you how to drive a car -- it's to teach you how to pass the driving test, in which reversing by looking backwards is the easiest way.

automatics belong in econoboxes, I live in a top 5 worst traffic city in the US and I'd never want to subject myself to bumper-to-bumper freeway commutes in a manual.

Unless you're shifting early there isn't really gas saved, but shifting early could really fuck up your plugs so consider if it's worth it.

Benefits of manuals are different.
1. More fun

3. Cheaper

But it's mostly because it's more fun, if I lived in a congested traffic area, i'd probably get a automatic, but I don't so manual it is.

Driving manual isn't really that hard, it's mostly muscle memory. While you won't have to deal with stalling or roll-back in an auto, you can still practice the basic movements and get used to one-handing the wheel.

>>
>>142739792
>I drove both, automatic is boring.

Driving a car isn't meant to be interesting, it's a chore that gets you from point A to point B. Automatic Transmission, Cruise Control, Turn By Turn navigation, the trend in the technology is towards reducing the work load on the driver and we're rapidly approaching the time when our cars will drive us around.

When you need to commute two hours to work, automatics are a god send.

And at this point automatics are better for speed and faster shifting as well.

There's really no reason for a manual transmission to exist anymore aside from it being "more fun" when the conditions are right and them being just one more thing you can act elitist about.

The amount of fun I had on the road was completely negligible between the different transmissions, the main difference was that auto was less of a chore than manual and that is all a car ride should be, comfort.
This hate for automatic transmission is as fucking pointless as console wars.

If I wanted to drive a car for fun I wouldn't drive it on city roads or country roads in any case.
>>
>I have never driven a car: the thread
>>
>>142744636
>It's a chore to Americans it seems

For most Americans it is literally the only form of transportation they use. Side walks are limited, bike lanes barely exist, walking or biking a regular road is taking your life into your own hands, and most cities and towns lack any usable form of public transportation (and when they have it it's full of scary brown poor people.) So even if you're just going a few miles down the road, you hop in the car.

>>
>>142745026
Do people not realize how huge America is?
>>
>>142745026
That's why functional cupholders are essential in any vehicle you want to sell in the US.
There are parts that are absolutely barren as far as the eye can see in either direction, and there are cities that were so poorly designed that main highways are continuously jammed.
>>
>>142745325
Your point? I can find a job 3 hours away too, why would I do that instead of finding a job close to my home?
>>
>>142745026
A two hour commute isn't particularly long for someone who commutes into a city with traffic congestion.
>>
>>142745371
Do you think people choose to work hours away? You go where the jobs are and you have to factor in cost of living, it's more expensive to live in cities with lots of people and that's typically where a lot of the work is.
>>
>>142745403
>>142745026

>>
>>142745120
It's the only thing that's practical. Even if the grocery store is right down the street, why would you bother to carry 4+ bags of crap on your person all the way back home? Just dump it in the trunk or backseat and save the time.

Commutes are frequently 30+ minutes even when using freeways.

And public transportation does not have sufficient infrastructure in place to get you where you need to go.
>>
>>142745371
It's not necessarily about how far away people work, but large parts of America have very little to no public transportation because either
a) There's colossal stretches of FUCKING NOTHING between any given towns or cities
b) It's not worth the initial investment to set up, nor cost efficient to maintain when everyone already drives everywhere

Different parts of the world work differently, who woulda thunk it.
>>
>>142745478
Yes.
>>
>>142745478
Yes. There are cities where you could live within the metropolitan area (not the city itself but in one of the surrounding cities that have grown together enough that its almost one continuous city) where traffic is so bad that it would take you two hours at rush hour to get to a job in the city center. And in a lot of cases there is no transportation alternative, you pretty much have to use the roads.
>>
>>142745597
>>142745630

Oh boy. I'm lucky then with my 10 min commute.
>>
>>142745497

Try harder, a job close to you won't suddenly fall out of the sky, you think I started with a job a block away? I got off my butt and applied when it opened, the third time I got in, now I got a job at walking distance.

Now, if you live somewhere where there are no jobs and you're forced to long commutes, that's another problem.
>>
>>142745660

>We don't understand the concept because the whole thing in nonsense.

Well you can live in the city and your rent will have you living at starvation level even with a good job, or you can live outside the city and have a reasonable standard of living. If you want a job in the suburbs themselves you're going to be flipping burgers or working a register at retail because your only purpose there is to service the people who work in the city, and you might actually be living in an entirely different neighborhood and commuting there.

Learned from my mom. Like this guy said >>142744287
Manual driving is pure muscle memory. Once you get used to it it is every bit as mindless as automatic.

Ignore whatever anyone else says, the only real differences are this: Manuals are cheaper and give you more control, Automatics require less attention. It's like the difference between dating a poor mexican girl (manual) or a middle-class single mom (automatic). Just go with whatever suits your needs.

>>142745828
Because living in urban areas, depending on location, can either be ruinously expensive, or outright shitty. The appeal of a suburb is that you can get a larger house and a lower cost of living, as well as less traffic, overpopulation, pollution, etc. The thing you lose is that you're further from potential job locations. On the other hand, even trying to get across town in the same metropolitan area can be a fucking nightmare, so either way, you have to wade through traffic.

Keeping the car straight in not what you need two hands for. You need them to react...

Have you ever driven a car?

Right foot on either gas or brake at all times.
There's no point pressing down both, duh.
>>
>>142748708
Use your right foot to make sure you don't freak out and press down with both feet. You do stupid stuff when shit hits the fan, and using only your right foot for both peddle and break helps prevent stupid stuff.

Manual is a far more economic choice, though driving auto is carefree which is kind of enjoyable.

How do automatics overtake? So, in a manual I see someone lugging in front of me, I drop down a gear or two, floor it for quick delicious torque and go back into high gear once safely past.

How does that work on automatics?

>>
>>142747867
American interstates are straight as much as possible and our speed limits rarely exceed 70mph. Which is a good thing because our roads are kept in way too shitty of a condition to be driven on at German speeds.
>>
>>142749365

>>
>>142749385
Automatics don't have the same level of horsepower per gear.
>>
>>142749314
Well actually, if it doesn't affect them and they have no desire to know about it, why would they waste time learning about it?
>>
>>142749385
So it's like that, these automatics seem smarter than I give them credit for.
Still, according to you there seems to be quite a time lag between pressing the pedal and downshifting.
>>
>>142749568

>>
Can automatics do 50km/h in 5th gear?
>>
>>142749750
>Do people actually stick to that where you live?

Not unless they have drugs on them or can see a cop. Most people drive ten to fifteen miles over. So between 65 and 85 depending on if they're inside or outside of the city.
>>
>>142749454
>American interstates are straight as much as possible
I would seriously die of boredom driving on one of those espacialy at those speeds.
I guess that also explains why many if not most U.S. cars can't corner.

>>
>>142749733

It's too late now but it has been found to be a problem in the time since they were built. The long straight roads have a tendency to almost hypnotize drivers on long distance trips.
>>
>>142749883
Low RPM driving is a fun thing in its own right, requires a pretty different mindset from what you usually do.
Too bad I only use it when I'm low on fuel and want to save every drop, it's not really healthy for the engine in the long run.

You can do that, if you don't move from 2nd gear, you can drive 400 miles in 2nd gear, it's just not very economical.
