I concur. Jean isn't poorly written by any means but he's more of a textbook example of "character development 101" than anything else, which might explain why the author loves him so much, since he's so easy to write.
Next to the likes of Eren, Historia (whom I still to this day consider to be one of the most complex and challenging characters Isayama ever made), Armin or even Mikasa, whose character arcs venture into new and interesting directions, it's hard to see him as anything other than serviceable.
That isn't a bad thing btw: characters like Jean are always needed in stories like SnK in order for the reader to have some kind of a relatable anchor to humanity. But making him the MC instead of Eren wouldn't have helped the manga at all imho

I didn't really feel anything about Armin's death. I'm not even sure he's dead. Isayama does so many asspulls that it wouldn't surprise me at all if he got the serum and returned to normal. And before anyone tells me that he's dead for sure look at fucking Hanji. How many times has she been almost dead only to come back good as new? And she's a normal human.
Although I don't feel any sadness from this chapter I do feel something new. I think I hate Bert now. It's not even because "Grr, he killed Armin! ;_;". He's just an edgy piece of shit and annoying as fuck. I don't have any sympathy for him. I see where you're coming from. It's been so long since an important character died and the main cast has escaped death so many times despite getting so close to being kill that it's normal you and probably a lot of other readers wouldn't even feel any impact from the death of even one of EMA, since the first thing that would come to mind would be to question whether or not he's even dead or not (even if it looks actually quite clear that he is).
That's definitely on Isayama for giving the main cast too much plot armor in the earlier arcs and encouraging us to get comfy with them, thinking that they're untouchable or smth: we're not used to the idea of characters not being safe nor of death being impartial.
I mean, I'm too much of an Arminfag not to feel anything while reading this chapter, but I do believe that if the likes of Sasha or even Connie had died in an earlier arc, you (and possibly other readers who felt the same way) might've found his sacrifice more impactful.
