Does anyone else genuinely believe that Golden Age Arc Griffith was actually in love with Guts? That's honestly my read. The story drills in so hard how important Griffith's dream is to him... I think it's that Griffith was in love with him. That's the problem with the "just a bromance" theory, there's always that question of "what was so special about Guts?" With the "Griffith wants the Guts D but can't actually go for it because it'll get in the way of his dream and then Guts leaves" theory we have that answer, it's that Griffith loved him.
To be clear, I think all romantic feelings were on Griffith's end. I don't think Guts was in love with Griffith, only that he saw him as a good friend and a leader.

Griffith, is a tsundere turned into yandere (and I despise those stereotypes, but is true).
He first saw Guts as a valuable resource to add to his army. With Guts' continued success on their campaigns, he rose within the ranks and got in the upper echelon of the Hawk and Friends.
Griffith then confided in Guts his dreams and wishes but still saw Guts as a tool and his subordinate.
When Hawk and Friends' exploits started to give access, power and recognition to them, Griffith started to tie many of those into Guts being in the band. Their relationship became friendship on both sides.
Zed happens and now Griffith admires Guts. From here until Guts departure, Griffith nurtures love and affection towards Guts whilst fighting over his idealistic, narcissistic and ruthless nature. He completely forgets Guts exists and now only idolizes Guts. Then Guts says he's leaving.
How can this be? He loves Guts, why is Guts leaving then? He is mine.
Then Guts beats him.
