SZS might be the best series that has had the hardest time getting good quality fan work done for it. Too dense, too deep, too niche.

That's just the early chapters, it's kind of like KNK where the first few chapters are unreadable, but they gradually get better.
After a while the scans improve heavily.

You underestimate how casual most anime fans are. It's easy to do because now casuals can enjoy lots of shows they previously never watched thanks to simulcasts being available for 90% of new anime. But SZS is from the era right before simulcasts became widespread, it was done entirely on fansubs. It was planned to get an official license but that never went through, so casuals have no real exposure to it since they don't really watch fansubs. The manga does have an official English translation but they stopped after only 13 volumes in 2012.
It's completely off their radar.
