I'm surprised Initial D is tracking above CCS.
>>
>>142617243
I disagree. Ashram was a second-tier villain and Vagnard couldn't even be taken seriously. Nothing was as moving or as powerful after that fight, the series was almost a perfectly symmetrical bellcurve in quality with the apex being the duel.

I think the originals beat 2040 over the head in terms of style, sound and aesthetic.
But 2040 at least has a single, continuous story that actually fleshes out the girls and the world more than the flashy vignettes of the original.
And before anyone tries to say I hated the original, I payed 120 bucks to the recent Kickstarter for the American release of the BDs.

Lodoss? Yes. The first half is particularly bad because it's just a QUALITY retelling of the latter half of the OVAs. The second half of the TV series, following Spark, is better, but still not good.
By the end of the series, the only things I was really enjoying were the omake shorts at the end of each episode dubbed.
Still, Eternally God-tier OP.

I fully expected FMA to take 2003 and Bebop to take 1998.

Most of us Murrikans got into anime off Toonami/Adult Swim.
The shows that aired there have nostalgia going for it.

Personally, I voted Lain and Kino because I think they're better than their competition.
Although that's not to say things like Bebop and FMA are bad. Bebop is actually extremely good, just not Lain good.

I might be too hasty saying it's just the nostalgia that is winning it. Maybe people just couldn't digest Lain, and found it super confusing and bizarre.
Bebop, on the other hand, doesn't even require an analytic mind to enjoy. It's got fun characters, great action, and a compelling story, all topped with bitchin' style.

Basically, I'm saying Lain was 2deep for some people. That's probably why they're picking Bebop.

All wrong. It's very good at being popular but in a way that makes you feel validated in your taste, and not as a guilty pleasure, that's the key, not simple popularity. The vote isn't just a popularity contest, it's a vote for what's the most critically well received in title, the most PERCEIVED to be the most critically appreciated by pleb public in practice. Because they don't have their own taste.

Thus Cowboy Bebop is the ultimate candidate, note just for Best Anime of 1998, but of All Time. It's accessible and unchallenging, but presents itself as otherwise **>muh genre unto itself, please believe me**. Psuedointellectual plebs feel vindicated for enjoying it, and so stop their journey into not being tasteless tryhards right there.

Because they may have tried SEL or Gasaraki, but they plainly didn't get it **though they'll tell themselves "I get why it's good but I just don't like it, dude"**. Though they probably didn't try it. The top two I quoted didn't, I promise you.

I don't even get how people are still voting for Lain. The show was already outdated in its themes a decade ago and shows even more signs of bad aging now. To anybody born after the early 90s, it must feel just awkward now. Similar to Tron or The Lawnmower Man and their naive views of computers and their effect on society.

Don't get me wrong, I liked Lain, but it only works when seen as a product of its time or through thick nostalgia goggles.

There's a quaintness to outdated science fiction.

I love Lain a lot but as far as things go their no way it would take my vote for AOTY for 1998. Bebop is just, for me, a much better spectacle. >Bebop is just a much better spectacle.
I get that. That's not unfair.

Bebop is well-crafted, I'd argue less so than Lain, but it's still very good.
As >>142624296 pointed out, Bebop is accessible and unchallenging. Some may see this as a downside, but really it's just that Bebop and Lain have different objectives.
Bebop is tremendously fun. The jazz, the old west style in sci fi, it's all really great.
It's going to strike a chord with people very easily.

Lain is not going to do that. It's just way too challenging for the average person to enjoy, and it's probably not what most people want out of anime.
If you want a spectacle, then Bebop makes sense for your pick.
I, however, really enjoy what Lain does. I enjoy analyzing the media I consume, and Lain gives me that more than almost any TV series or anime.

TL;DR I respect your opinion, but I voted for Lain because I think it's better.

>Bebop is just, for me, a much better spectacle
that's an understatement, Lain wasn't remotely trying to be. but as a spectacle, cowboy bebop falls flat for all the same reasons it's "beloved": it's constant fucking pretentiousness dragging itself down.

Lupin the 3rd, where it pulled all its honest cool from, did it all better - outdated animation and somewhat weak pacing with many filler episodes, sure - but the best of Lupin easily outstrips the best of Cowboy Bebop (imo, it's only genuinely great episode was the pilot)

& maybe it's unfair since it clearly comes in Cowboy Bebop's wake, but the Mine Fujiko Lupin show from 2012 does it far better than it did, including genuinely challenging art direction not just ostensibly and narrative, alongside great pacing, action and animation. And again, without being dragged down by the tryhard cool in favor of authentically stylish direction.

It's not necessarily a matter of nostalgia or people not getting Lain, some people just prefer a traditional narrative over an experimental one.

Kino is deep as fuck. Just with an easy to understand skeleton around it so you can enjoy without the mindfuck if you so please. Watch it again with more thought into why each town was designed the way it was and what its trying to tell us about the human condition.

And even if you are correct. Its still better than FMA

Oh, its because Kino is directed by the same guy as who did Lain. So ofc its gonna have the secret hidden human nature questions behind it.

That's a bit of a stretch. There's about five or six good series there; the rest is either deeply flawed or utter trash.

Polls about pre-2000 anime are always won by the most popular and accessible series of the year, because most people didn't see anything else from that time.

Don't fall for the "people lurk and watch x series before trying to contribute" meme. In reality active posters are mostly newfags.

Was difficult to pick between Lain and Kare Kano, but in the end I had to go with Lain. Lain was perfect, Kare Kano was better than perfect for the most part but was only above average at the end. So it had to be Lain.

When I see the results I think that maybe I should pick Kare Kano instead, because it deserves a higher percent.

Cowboy bebop can be another option, the animation is just brilliant, is one of those rare cases is popular and is good

still, CCS is one of the best anime of the 90s and all time

We went wrong in the early 90s. The great anime in 1998 was a result of Evangelion saving anime after it has almost died, and studios finally got money to create good stuff. The creators had gotten many years to save up good ideas without money to make them, and the money came right after Evangelion, causing all their great ideas to finally be made and finished in 1998.

Is there any truth to this?

>>142644646
Toonami always wins, so the winner will probably be Stand Alone Complex.
If Naruto wins, that would be interesting.
Both Azumanga and Princess Tutu are quite /a/ core, and will probably get second and third after GitS, in unknown order. Wait, or Haibane.
Ï see FMP also aired that year, but most FMP fans are just Kyoani fans who skipped the first season, so it may not get that many votes.
But seriously, OMG 2002 has many popular anime.

2003 was also a really strong year.

CCS. I liked Lain and all, but it's just not as good as CCS.

Are you the kind of guys who hates Miyazaki movies because they aren't pro-industrialism enough? Because I seriously can't see how the nationalist/traditionalist/whatever elements in Gasaraki would be disruptive to a normal person. They're pretty well-integrated into the plot, go along with the political and mystical intrigue it has, and it doesn't prioritize beating you over the head with it over telling a story.
