Need help getting a proper english of this, I'm not even sure I'm getting it correctly though:

> それはフォローするつもりで自然と口にした言葉だった
I said that (or an expression like "it slipped out" would be better?) expecting a natural follow-up...

Aren't you going to tell me "what are you doing"?

let's say I'm so delusional that I actually think that I can learn japanese to a decent enough level that I can play the japanese version of Persona 5 before it comes out in the west (meaning that I might be decent enough to play it before february, not when it comes out in September).

Where the hell do you even begin? What do japanese games like Persona use as subtitles? Kanji, Katakana? I don't know shit

First you kill yourself to be reborn with better stats, because currently your character obviously sucks.

If you still want to keep it though, start studying the two alphabets (hiragana and katakana).
Once you've got both permanent into memory, move up to grammar.
It's relatively easy if you've got a nice INT stat.
After your grammar basics are solid, you get to read anything that interests you and with a dictionary you'll gradually get more vocab.

If you know absolutely nothing, if you study it well and don't give up at all I think you'll be ready to play Persona 9 before it comes to the west.

Do the core 2k and read a grammar guide like Tae Kim or Genki. Then play a Japanese copy of Persona 3/4. Make an Anki deck with words you see in the game that you don't recognize. After that, watch all the Persona 5 trailers and look at the press releases to see if you can find any vocabulary exclusive to that game (probably stuff about thieves). At least, that's what I would do.
>>
>>142606156
You could play it, today. The question is rather how much pain you're willing to go through playing it. If you have to waste too much time looking up words, phrases and grammar it might just ruin the experience.

But I'd say you could probably get to a reasonable enough level before next february, though you willhave to put in work.
>Where the hell do you even begin?

If you're not independent enough to get started on your own then you might as well not waste your time any further is my advice. You have a thread dedicated to learning Japanese with a guide in the very OP, and an image telling you to read it, yet you're incapable even of that. Do you think learning a language is smooth sailing once you get started?

no that is definitely the verb that is there
it's just acting as a supplementary verb so you will never see that specific expression written in kanji

>wake up
>do reviews (~300/day at the moment)
>do new words (systematically learning all jouyou kanji through mined vocab, both kunyomi and onyomi)
>later in the evening, mine new words for the next day

I have been doing this for a couple months now. I probably just should have been reading instead, but I chose this method and I'm sticking with it until I finish all the jouyou kanji. I don't necessarily recommend people do it like I am but whatever. Only a few hundred to go. At least after this the only new kanji I will be encountering while reading will be jinmeiyou so it should go quite a bit faster.

In anki:
Hiragana/Katakana flashcards (purely review right now)
Kanji flashcards (mostly to get recognition and stroke order down). I learn 5 new kanji/day.
Vocab flashcards taken from Genki.
Review using custom study if I feel like it.
That all takes about 20-30 minutes. Then I lurk here and on IRC for a few hours.

Definitely going too slow, but I've been keeping this up for a month now so at least I made it a habit rather than burning out straight away.

Been studying for a few months now, got around 400 kanji matured and 1150 vocab, working slowly through grammar as well, but due to some sudden family circumstances I'll have to go out of town and likely not have the time or computer resources to study for a month or so. Realistically how badly should I expect this to set me back? I'm not going to have to basically start over, am I? I would be heartbroken if I got back and had basically forgotten everything.

I found that "guessing" is kinda normal during translation because english usually needs much more words to give the same meaning of some small japanese sentences...
When you don't have context it feels even more lacking too.

That's why I respects guys who translate and why I prefer to simply read and think "in japanese" (ongoing work here).

If you're stressed on time then just do reviews. It shouldn't take a lot of time unless you've got 100s of reviews. But if you absolutely won't be able to, then you'll probably forget a quite a bit depending on how well you've memorized them, but restarting shouldn't be too hard as you've learned them once already. I actually had this happen and could comfortably do 50 words per day and remember them all.

Furigana is pretty useless to people who don't already know Japanese anyway.

I need help with something simple and stupid.

I read somewhere some time ago the expression to say "for the first time in one's life".

If I recall correctly, it was something like 生まれてはじめて
But I am confused as how to use it.
For example, if I intend to say I am happy for teh first time in my life, I came up with the following:

生まれてはじめて幸せです

But it feels wrong.
Can anyone help with this and provide a few examples?
>>
>>142616975
>Don't expect any furigana in VNs, it's extremely rare.
This is patently untrue, it's very common for VNs to have furigana for difficult or rare vocabulary.

just fyi: there's a massive dissonance between the 命令形 verb and the fairly respectful お母さん.

>>142617875

I tried that, and all it turns up is a song from Frozen and instances of 生まれてはじめて as is with no context or without actually being used in a sentence.

Requesting help with a sentence:

> 俺の記憶ではクラスの中の下らへん目立たないような位置に居た
> (long descriptive text about her that I'm lazy to type) 彼女が

I'm uncertain about the subject in the first sentence, and about the -らへん form. Googling I found it to be "where, whereabouts", both in english and from a japanese post, but I'm not making much sense with it.

> 俺の記憶では
(in my memories)

> クラスの中の下らへん
(among the class' foolishness?)

> 目立たないような位置に居た
(there was <subject> doing as not to stand out)

Can I assume the subject is the talker, or, from the next sentence, 彼女?
Is there any tips on figuring this out easier? I feel I'm always too reliant on context and when there isn't one I feel sorta lost...

>>
>>142618169
へん = ない

「クラスの中の下らへん目立たない」 is one clause.

I can't tell who is the subject without more context.

buddy, I don't know how you think you're supposed to read 下らへん, but that へん doesn't mean ない.

>>142618435
下らない
>>
>>142618298
>>142618326
That's what I'm assuming, but I wasn't certain, thanks!

If you want more context, a guy meets a girl from a long time ago, and she's totally different, so he starts his inner dialogue with that "from my memories..." and after a description of her, he ends with "she looks like a completely different person (生物, which I found funny dunno why)"

I'm guessing the subject is "her", but I'm not entirely sure.
But from what you said that is one clause, I can't make sense of it. Could you provide the meaning of that?

"among my class' foolishness that didn't stand out"?

>>142618435
Like the previous guys said, that's sounds like some dialect which you should've heard in anime before (I know I did), that's why I was asking.
>>
>>142618517
>trolling

honestly don't know what makes you think that. If you actually read the link you'd see what らへん actually means in this context.

>>142618593
>下らない

So the speaker is just switching his dialect on and off between two literally consecutive words? (下らへん目立たない)

guess again.
>>
>>142618626
>"among my class' foolishness that didn't stand out"?

have any of you tried just googling for 下らへん?
every single result I can find uses it to mean 下ら辺

I'd be very interested to see a solid counter-argument rather than accusations of trolling.
>>
>>142619064
If you assume that the most common reading is used 100% of the time, you cannot learn Japanese. Just because it's on the front page of google it doesn't mean that a less common interpretation is never used.
>>
>>142619064
I'm the one who asked, but what I can say is... 下らない isn't a verb, らへん is a conjugation, which makes it grammatically inviable if you just think about it that way.

And also, if you've watched some anime you might remember the おじさん saying 下らへん! to kids around him when they ask something he doesn't want to.
