All players in Saki use real-world strategies in hand formation and defense, with the superpowers acting as an additional element of strategy in the way they interact with each other. Akagi, in contrast, is all about doing the exact opposite of the smart thing to do and having it magically work out because Akagi himself is just such a genius with unfathomable insight. Characters in Saki also actually have personalities and get development.

You still get a lot of that in Saki, but it's done in a magical shounen fashion: most players in Saki have their own unique 'power' that can influence how the game is played and the dynamic of the tournaments is largely focused on how those players are able to deal with the power of other players, in what almost turns into a giant 'rock-paper-scissors' style of counters. If you're in it for things like people distracting others while they steal tiles out of the pond, then Saki won't deliver, but if you're in it for things like people calling consecutive chi's and pon's to block Saki's kan, then you're going to have a blast.
