I can only see two possible escalation paths for the series, but neither include any conflict outside of the usual tournament arcs. We have the Pro League and/or the World League.
However, one of the last remaining unresolved story threads is Miho's relationship with Shiho and I do think that the Pro-league plot could be used to address this. It's stated in the movie that Shiho will be managing the Pro-leagues in some capacity in preparation for the World league. Were Miho to get into the Pro-league, this would bring her in direct contact with Shiho for the first time since their dispute arose. There are clearly unresolved issues between them and this could be a source of conflict.
That said, it's not a particularly strong element to base a series around, it would work better as a side-plot like the family stuff did in season 1

Having rewatched the series (followed by the movie) during the stream last weekend, the anime was so much more grounded than the movie. Not just in the action, but it has many more quiet and SoL moments that juxtapose so well with the action that we do get. And the action itself progressively gets more and more exciting as the series progresses. Seriously, look at how "realistic" the Ooarai vs. St. Gloriana match is compared the Ooarai vs. Kuromorimine match.

Switch focus to another school. Novelty will still be easy to keep as there are still a number of schools that have not been shown at all, plus there's many we haven't seen much of.
Another possibility is to deepen into the family-style tradition thing. We have an ongoing rivalry between the Shimadas and the Nishizumis already introduced, as well as inter-generational differences between the leader of the style and their daughters. Deepen into the mother and daughter's psychology, what Senshado means for Shiho, etc. It could end with them understanding each other at the end of the season.
A less likely possibility would be to timeskip a couple years. Miho enters college, along with most of her friends, but some might be dispersed into other colleges since their interests and abilities are very different. The pro league can be explored, new team building possibilities, a different environment, etc.

I enjoyed the movie a lot, but one of the things it lacked that I enjoyed previously was Miho going Yang Wenli on girl's asses. In the series she was in the process of rewriting the rulebook for Senshado by pushing it to the limit, but the movie spent so much time focusing on supporting characters doing wonky things to survive that Miho didn't really come off as being that good. In fact, the movie turned Miho into Reinhard who made some fashionable appearances and bold movies but mostly sat back and let his godlike team run circles around his enemies.

The series was an original anime. I don't remember what people expected back then. Maybe K-ON with tanks. What we got was something really refreshing. A sports story with a twist. As it was airing, we really didn't know what was gonna happen. And the whole saving the school thing didn't even show up until 2 months in.
The show rightly focused on the tank battles as the main attraction, but how they played out was always interesting cause no one had done anything like it before. Even by the end, and I mean episode 10, we were wondering how they'd ever meet expectations going forward. We had 3 months before episode 11 and 12 and wow, people were blown away.
The movie had a similar feat to achieve. Almost 3 years out, it had to build upon the expectations the series had established. In that way, I think it did a fantastic job, even if it did reuse the basic plotline of the series.
It's been a lot of fun and while I'd like more, just like after the end of series, I'd be very happy to see it end. I'd rather it stay good than get more added on that wasn't as good.

Everyone else has other personal investments: expanding pro league readiness becomes an opportunity for Miho to reconcile with her mom, other teams want to see how far they can go, volleyball club needs more members, and so on.
Meanwhile Yukari's screwed because her entire family moved off of the ship already and she lives with them for financial reasons. She has to transfer to another school, maybe one of the smaller existing ones, which is now in the same boat as Oorai, where they're under the threat of closure. She starts copying from Miho's playbook to help them shore up their senshadou team. Story follows both teams, with new characters in the underdog position and the old characters as more competent veterans until they finally face off. Miho's heart isn't in it because there isn't the same pressure and now she's fighting her friend, but Yukari reminds her that, win or lose, Miho plays because she loves the sport. After a dramatic match of two fairly even teams outwitting each other, Yukari ends up losing, Miho and Oorai win the second semester tournament. Ending takes place at the start of the next term. The new characters and Yukari all transfer back to Oorai, thereby securing the school's population. The senshadou team swells with the new crews and tanks, bringing them up to a competitive number, and the stage is set for the year's pro leagues in the next season that'll never happen.

I see A LOT of people talking about Anchovie all the time, it is pretty clear that she was getting close to Yukari levels of popularity. Rosehip however, was only being frequently mentioned when that britfag was online in the thread. There were times no one were mentioning her.

I have felt that while the movie could be a grand finale it is more like the End of Part 1 of the story.
Miho and Shiho still need to reconcile. This will most likely come after they face each other in tank combat. Still, it needs to happen. Hell, I wouldn't mind having a flashback arc showing Shiho and Shimada 20-25 years ago when they both were high school students and the heads of their respective schools' tank teams. Honestly, I wouldn't mind getting more backstory/character growth for most of the characters.
