In short, he had low standards and even lower expectations and it's pretty much unimaginable for him to ever talk to royalty.
Usually you'd get summoned by royalty if they ever, but this one appeared right at their doorstep, which gives an impact.
It is like talking to a man who can change the world and realising that he's actually not just sitting in his ivory tower and that he is actually interested in the people below him.
