It's not even just that. Through out the whole series she gets abused.
She loves Saki more than anything. Even when they were in a relationship Saki constantly thought about being with Shun. When Shun died Saki starts going after Satoru and abandons Maria. Maria is then forced to breed by the mole people so they can make human weapons. And in the end Saki blames Maria for and says it is her fault that tragedy befell the village. Oh right, and she was murdered after being forced to breed. Because they did find her bones in the novels.
And that's not even counting all the other faults the series has, like pacing issues and plot holes.

Pacing is not a buzzword. The series has four time skips. And they use the time skips instead of actually developing the story. Time skips, then info dumps are not how you pace a story.
