The setting of "tiny refuge in the middle of literal hell" is dark, but it isn't necessarily grimdark in that it's not depicted as a hopeless battle. Essentially, Shinju never needed the inclusion of Sange as part of the Hero system, as demonstrated by everyone getting their bodily functions back without a hitch. Meaning that the whole conflict of the last third of the anime was completely avoidable if Shinju had bothered to take into account the disastrous (and blatantly obvious) consequences Sange could have. The only reason it exists is to give the characters something to angst over and incite conflict, only to be resolved casually.
At that point, it's just unnecessary and stupid grimdark in an anime that's supposed to defy grimdarkness. It should have never come up.

The whole idea was that the Taisha didn't view the Yuushas as individual people, so when shit hit the fan Sonoko told them lay in the bed they made.

As for the Mankai, the Yuusha system has evolved multiple times throughout history. When Yuuna did whatever she did in episode 12, the Shinju was overwhelmed with the excess power and was able to return the girls their bodily functions. The newest Yuusha system has no fairies or sange but as a result the girls are mortal and more fragile, leading to the need to mass produce them.

Gin died in WaSuYu and the Taisha put the fairies and Mankai in as a protective measure, and the only way that was possible was through sange. Yuuna's group were the first strong enough to kill the Vertex rather than push them back.

You know all of this shitposting about Madoka and YYY is really fucking stupid. Whats even more stupid is all the yurigoggles that people need to take off and burn. Better yet leave them on while you do it.
They were both good series but the biggest problem with YYY was the entire ending of the series was a giant cop out. Literally every single negative aspect of the show is canceled by magic so they get a cookie cutter happy end. Its bullshit and dumb. You cant introduce a plot point and then suddenly just hand wave it away cause it makes someone sad. If the show had any chance to stand up to Madoka it lost it right there as the entire show betrayed itself and its setting.
While Madoka had a reset in it it didnt cop out and demean itself for a happy ending. The only difference from the start of the show and the end of the show is that the girls dont turn into witches. They still fight and die. They still suffer. Those were the main plot points and elements of the show and since they werent totally resolved they NEED TO REMAIN INTACT. The only way to give a setting like that a good end is to stop the main antagonists and put and end to the sytems that push the setting. Neither show did that so to suddenly just jump out and go WHOOPS CANT HAVE A SAD ENDING EVERYONE GETS THE USE OF THEIR SACRIFICED BODIES BACK! is fucking stupid. Madoka at least had the balls to continue on with its setting when it wasnt resolved. Any sequel of YYY will be plagued by this decision later as now there is literally no actual threat or meaning behind fighting. We know the girls cant die and we now know they arent being sacrificed. So whenever there is a fight you just spawn magical girls that spam magic and beat the invaders because its already been proven that you cant die unless they reach the middle.
If you want a sequel they would have to rewite the setting AGAIN to do something different which they would probably just asspull a happy end from again anyway.

The girls could still fight. Sonoko was extremely strong even as a log, she could have taken the other 5 Yuushas by herself. The thing is they're a log when not transformed. The Taisha kept Sonoko's terminal away from her to prevent her resisting. They were going to do that with the others eventually, they thought they had total control. They compensated their families with huge sums of wealth and special privileges, and provided everything the Yuushas needed in their everyday lives. It was considered an honor.
