I just don't get it. Why are some of you enjoying this so much? As far as SoL/iyashikei goes it feels pretty middle of the pack to me. Nothing really stands out. Character design and art direction are pretty standard and the ost is pretty forgettable.
I don't know why, but in more than one way, this show just rubs me the wrong way as an SoL. I dunno. This is coming from someone who's favorite show is Aria.

I don't think it's the top of the pack of SoLs but I personally like it a lot because of the way it weaves in magic and mundanity together. The cafe episode was especially great because of this. It's also the reason why I think Chinatsu carries the show so hard. She's by far the most dynamic character in the show because of her sense of wonder and childish awe towards the mysticism she comes upon day by day.
That being said, what I will admit the show lacks are those emotional highs and really satisfying moments of catharsis that soothe the soul. I think that alone is what's keeping me from ranking this show any higher.

Flying Witch is special because it's very restrained and subdued. It takes its time and progresses really slowly, hitting a few comedy notes without letting that dominate the otherwise conversational feel. That helps it feel more immersive because the characters seem to behave more like people than like comedy tropes.
I'll agree with >>142503820 that it lacks the "emotional highs" of a show like Aria or NNB, but I'll disagree that that's holding back its potential. I think it's just going for something slightly different and I think maybe leaving out those big emotional highs is helping it in a way by making it more peaceful.
What it has instead are moments of realization or learning as well as bits of growth, which is how it reminds me of Aria. My favourite one is still when Chinatsu realizes that the Spring Courier just wants to be her friend. That's one of those big moments from childhood when you realize that even adults just want to be liked, and that even a child has the power to hurt someone's feelings. After that though you see Chinatsu growing and being more bold and less timid around supernatural things, because her initial hesitation is giving way to her curiosity. So it's heartwarming to see her run over to the Shroud of Night and ask what she's reading , when Episode 2 Chinatsu would never have done something like that.
Anyways my favourite thing about Flying Witch is just how understated it is. It feels very light compared to other comedy SOLs.

The simple writing and how the characters develop were nothing too special I'll grant you that. What makes the show work for me is the romantic undertones that is set up by the music and imagery. It felt like a romance between Akari, her friends and Neo-Venezia itself more than a "purer" more banal slice of lice which is what Flying Witch is closer to.

I think there is beauty in that simplicity. Now I realize people will probably shit on me hard because of this, but I think a prime example of that this season is Unhappy which was mostly written off as generic garbage but that can't be helped. That's what I am saying. Sure, you can talk about artistic things in writing or art intellectually and discuss them. And for some people this is what they want out of it. But sometimes these peope suddenly think they have "taste" and therefore these "objective" stuff must apply to everyone. Including the creators.
