Why's Anki so SLOW at uploading media?
>>142472938
Because your internet connection is slow at uploading media. Amazing, I know, right?

われわれわわ人
If you can read this, you understand Japanese.
>>142476316

I'll take 下 over 受 and 出 words any day of the week
>>142477108
>Core
Not even once
>>142477478
>not doing the most efficient way of memorizing basic vocab
Why
>>142477693
Can't imagine core is the most efficient way, just the most common one
The fact that it throws all those 下 words at you at once is just one of the ways that it's definitely not the most efficient
>>142476316
If you can read this you might be able to pass N3
どんな人だと思いますか。
>>142477896
I'd rather see all of them at once than getting confused by them later. They're extremely common so it isn't that hard to get down.
Just curious what do you think is more efficient?
>>142477963
I actually got it from my Genki II pack. I just wanted beginners to feel good.
>>142478017
Not that guy but, personally I only memorized their readings based on the okurigana but I'm not sure I really know the meanings of all the individual 上/下 words, probably because it did throw them all at once at me.
>>142476316
i can't believe i used to think this would be the hardest thing i would ever have to read when i first saw it. ったく
>>142478015
she looks very 元気 if i do say so myself
>>142478017
It's seeing them all at once that causes confusion, seeing them separately gives you a much easier time differentiating the meanings
And I'm not sure of any alternatives, I just assume core can't possible be "the most efficient", it's a fine option for sure, but it could be done better
>>142478193
There might be some things that need fixing up like that, but I really doubt there's some other method that is as fast. You can probably learn the words that didn't stick later by reading anyways.
Quick question. What does this mean? I've never seen it in text and I don't know how to type it to google it.
>>142478193
In the core before 2K / 6k all of those words were separated apart.
下がった was supposed to be the 1003rd word.
下ろす the 1405
下げる 919
I think they just combined them all so it could be convenient matching the kanji.

either draw your kanji in google translate or remember an easy word that uses it
This is written after a characters name, can someone help me out, here? Is it refering to the age?
>>142478869
It's a contraction of the word 合法鳥, kind of like the word "cuck" in English.
>>142478722
I don't even know how to begin looking at that. I know nothing about Japanese I just wanted to know what that character meant, and now I do, so thank you.
Also didn't know about the draw feature, I'll bear that in mind next time. Thanks anons.
>>142478851
Obviously I know about a million words that use 罪, including just the word "罪", but that guy obviously didn't, so radicals or drawing it on google translate are the only things he could have done, you smart ass
>>142478920
Isn't that like a really obscure meaning? I thought it was refering to legal age.
Do you guys think if the revised core deck had the original word list, but removed all the filler stuff it would be much better?
>>142479066
Filler stuff as in katakana? Just delete easy cards when you stumble upon them, that's what I do.
>>142478131
>I only memorized their readings based on the okurigana
How else would you recognize them if not by okurigana? Subtle oscillations between radical particles?
>>142478920
Really?
>>142479043
That's also what I though.
>>142478869

>>142479025
radical search is for dirty anki users who don't know proper stroke order
>>142479196
But you can learn stroke order with anki too anon, most kanji decks have it included.
>>142476316

She is actually 20+, sir.
>>142479196
You don't even need to know stroke order to draw shit on google translate, hell you don't even need to draw most of the strokes for it to get it, it's obviously the more casual choice
I only use radical search because I pretty much always have jisho open so it's just easier, not that I ever have to use it anyway because I can pretty much always think of at least one word that has the kanji I'm looking for in
Just popped into say I'm so fresh you can suck my nuts.

The radical at the bottom is hard to distinguish. Anki's font size hasn't prepared me for this.
>>142479130
No, the filler is because they want you to do a card 4 to 5 times in the original deck. They want you to memorize by picture, sentence, voice and word. That's too much stuff just for one word.
>>142480043
I know the order and it's completely useless. Radical search is better than google translate in every way. I haven't ever found any use to my ability to write and I want my "10 minutes" back.

Anybody happen to be doing Kendo, Kenjutsu or some other form of martial art? Do you let your teacher know that you're learning japanese, or is that immediately going to put you into the weeaboo corner?
>>142481726

Note to the reading list maintainer, if you're around.
I'm re-organising the reading list by difficulty so please don't think I'm trying to graffiti it or whatever and undo my edits.
>>142481726
You can't mention that you're learning Japanese in any situation in life without instantly getting the weeb treatment
>>142481726
"Learning" Japanese sounds retarded. It will always put you into the weeb corner no matter the circumstances. The trick is to let no one know until you can comfortably say you speak Japanese. "Knowing" Japanese, that's something you can tell people.
>>142481935
"Knowing Japanese" is still gunna get you the weeb treatment most of the time
>>142482052

Does anyone have any idea how to translate マス間隔? I feel like I've grasped the general meaning after reading a few sentences, but I still have no idea what would be a good translation.
Here's two of the example sentences I've found.

>>142483199
No shit reading LNs is normal, people wouldn't even know what it is just by seeing the letters and if it's in Japanese it'd be a great conversation starter.
But anon, don't make it obvious that you're reading manga when outside. Maybe anime has distorted your view of reality, but that's not the reputation you want in a work environment.
Remember this isn't about autistically hiding your interests out of fear of a social stigma you lack the confidence for dealing with or something, this is about actually going out there and letting people know of it.
>>142483712
I was under the assumption N3 is when things start to actually get interesting. I'm apparently at N4 -> N3 level.
>>142483715

"Hiding your powerlevel" can easily be taken too far, as long as you don't look or act like an autist no one will care that you like this stuff. In the email, it sounded like I could only take it once.
By what rationale is the Core 2k/6k optimized jap vocab deck ordered? Most used or useful words?
Also, why is it core 2k/6k if there is 6000 words? Why 2k?
>>142487651
Anime is for casuals now, it's probably easier to hardsub things than to deal with complaints from people who can't figure out how to change subtitles and assume that everything will "just work."
>>142487843
No.
You can only take it once ever 6 months. You could technically sign up with a new email before that, but even taking it less than a year apart would pretty much be cheating since you might remember a couple of the questions.

It's ordered so that words using the same kanji are grouped together. I personally don't think this is "optimal" because it often results in you getting many similar words in a row, making it very easy to get muddled up.
can someone screenshot their core deck template layout? i kinda fucked mine up but i'm not sure how. i just wanna go back to default
>>142489041
Yeah, I've got a bunch of words with 表 with similar (english) definitions and it's fucking me up pretty bad.

after literally spending 0 dollars on learning this much since i will never own an apple product for buying anki, it wasnt a hard choice anon
if you cant afford that much, i understand :^)
Still confused of what na-adj are

>if you cant afford that much, i understand :^)
>>142489838
I'm lazy, it's a lot easier to grind anki than read and understand grammatical literature. I think I'll tone back my new words per day so I can free up some time to wrap up TK. I want to get over that hurdle so I can start reading and perhaps make studying fun and more rewarding than flashcards.

Any time is a good time to start. Vocabulary doesn't really matter when you read anyway since you can just look words up in a dictionary, and nothing in yotsuba should be hard grammar wise. In fact it might even be a waste of time since there's little it can teach you that you won't pick up from listening to cartoons, other than sharpen your reading speed a little. It's a nice manga though.
I ended up dropping it and starting an LN instead since it exposes me to more complex sentences, though that's because I had put off doing any actual reading for half a year before then and yotsuba was below my level.
Also it doesn't seem right that you have 1500 cards while only being "most" of the way through Tae Kim. That should really have been something you finished probably before you even started anki.
Should I watch all of tae kim then go for anki?

watch?

Adjectives that aren't regularly conjugatable natively Japanese kunyomi words that end in things like-i/-shii, but rather unconjugatable onyomi compounds that need "na" as an auxiliary particle suffix to make their adjective status clear when put before words. An exception would be kunyomi adjectives ending in -ka/-yaka, as they're na adjectives too due to being relatively rare in modern standard Japanese.
>>142489951
just nouns that you put な on to make them adjectives
>>142490219
Sorry, I don't think I've registered at your website in the first place.
>>142490170
tae kim's videos don't even go as far as to introduce verbs to the mix so you can't "watch" all of tae kim
you should read his grammar guide though yes
>tfw posting in the same thread as anki-drones
i feel unsafe. d-do you think they know there is actual japanese outside of that program?

What is japanese? I do know a lot of words made up by funny squiggles, but I don't know what to do with 'em.
>>142490326
>d-do you think they know there is actual japanese outside of that program?
Where do you think I find words to make my cards from? I need like 2 hours of reading to mine my daily quota.
>>142490326
>do you think they know there is actual japanese outside of that program?
There's a way to learn Japanese outside flash cards?
>>142490106
if tae kim still looks like a hurdle to you after a couple months then you have a lot more in store for you than you think
he teaches foundational grammar, not reading comprehension
>grammatical literature
what did he mean by this
>>142489881
Core2k only takes like a month to finish.
>>142490534
2000 cards / 20 cards a day = 100 days (over 3 months) to complete

Correct, assuming you're planning on burning out after a month and never learning Japanese.

What? The actual dragons are scarier than dinos
Came across a proverb in the A Dictionary of Advanced Japanese Grammar that sounds so much better than the Chinese version of the time.
Chinese:
心不在焉、視而不見、聴而不聞、食而不知其味。
Japanese:
心焉に在らざれば、視れども見えず、聴けども聞こえず、食らえども其の味を知らず。
I know Chinese history has a lot of poetry and the like, of which a lot of is famous for being referenced in Japanese verse, but fuck me the Chinese poetry these older Japanese poets regarded as valuable sound like complete shit compared to the Japanese verse which was inspired from it. Even Chinese proverbs sound better as a monged English translation than they do in the original language.
Apparently ど was used in a similar way in older Japanese to how ば is used in modern Japanese, which is kind of neat. Are there any anons here with experience with 古典? I'm still a long way away but various phrases and idioms with roots in classical Japanese pop up here and there in manga and it sounds kind of neat.
>>142481339
That's because Japanese isn't English.
>>142490753
It's only 66 words a day for 30 days, which is fuck off if the anon is only using Anki for vocab, which seems to be a pretty popular trend.
>>142491923
You'd burn out by the time a month was over if you did anki for that long every day.
>>142491851
I read this part of the book less than an hour ago. It was Confucius, right?
Who decided it would be a good idea to create kanji?

This is the worst advice I've ever heard in my life.
Maybe we should just link to the old guide at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1G5C7fCe07CDzYalZYZObzxv_fhw7RUNsLHiMAY-t7FA/edit instead of the crappy new guide if it's going to give awful advice like this.
