I'm rewatching Samurai Champloo. Here's one thing I never got.
Remember this exchange?

basically he's resolved that even if he found someone he believed in they would die, betray, or leave him.

He's basically saying he always gets the wrong end of the stick.
When he was just fighting for himself (i.e. the netire series) he had to kill his master and then deal with the fallout of having to kill all of his friends, which sucked.
In that moment, he had decided that he was going to dedicate his life to guarding Fuu (hence the flashback to his learning the technique of taking a deadly blow to kill off your opponent). But rather than being joyfully redeemed by the "right" samurai path, he knew he was almost certainly about to die.
Thus, whether he follows the right or wrong path, he is destined to either die nobly or live in dishonor;he always gets stuck with the burdensome part of his choice

It's separate from the rest of the line of thought. Basically Jin is bitching that he always has to be the clean-up for Mugen and Fuu.
