Backstories =/= motivations, and they're often a cheap, lazy way to make a character sympathetic without putting any effort into characterizing them purely through their dialogue and behaviour in the present storyline. Not saying that applies to BnHA, but for example, in HxH Hisoka and Meruem are interesting without any actual backstory at all.
