This will mark the final transition between Eren and co. being the young up-and-comers that they were and them being the heroes/old guard. Jean will likely be promoted to leader, with Armin filling in Hange's role, etc. A victory here will prove that fighting isn't pointless and a wave of new blood will pour in to replace the SC's lost manpower.
That's what it seems like to me anyway, with the way they've been grooming certain characters.

It's already a stretch that they should bring the serum at all, just in case they have the opportunity to take one of their shifter enemies alive (MT in particular), inject the serum into someone on the verge of death, and then set it up so said dying person eats the captured MT the moment they transform.
