Yes, there are lots of people who have IBO as their babby's first Gundam and they enjoyed it, it's a good starting point. Bear in mind though that it's a bit different from other Gundam shows, Gundam usually has mecha action every episode but this one doesn't.
Also /m/ has a hateboner for this show and will try to convince you that the show is worse than Hitler and a failure but the truth is most people enjoyed it and the show has been well received despite its flaws )also is selling better than G-Reco), ignore /m/ posters.

Most people fail to realize that the protagonist role is split into two, and put all their expectations on the manlet. Archer is the guy who you pay attention to if you want characterization and conflict.
The action is pretty poor for Gundam, but it's pretty different from most of the franchise. It's like they looked at the tropes for a typical Gundam series, then flipped half of them upside down for better or worse.

IBO is worse than Aldnoah. The protagonist is an edgy emotionless unsympathisable fuck with zero characterisation and nothing happens. Archer is there to bait fujos and do nothing except look cool. There is no journey - they get from point a to b with zero losses and zero character development. There are no scenes that make you feel any sort of emotion except boredom. The soundtrack with the exception of Raise Your Flag is devoid of inspiration, the Garma/Char is a pisspoor rehash of 0079. A couple of trips on /m/ have actually been doing a fair job at getting the better stuff translated. Feddie hooligans is fully translated, Thunderbolt is pretty much caught up, Johnny Ridden MSV has got a lot more chapters translated now that they got a hold of scans, All of crossbone but ghost is done, and there are numerous one volume stuff that has gotten done.
