This really felt out of place and bizarre to me, I heard later that there are hints the girl is a prostitute and he doesn't understand why she's ignoring his advances but it still felt tacked on and never really went anywhere.

I really hate that this is the only thing Royal Space Force is remembered for around here at all; it's by far my favorite animated movie.
Too bad this movie was a commercial failure. Gainax produced such a masterpiece, and almost nobody remember.

It did have some meaning. Shiro was portrayed for the most of the movie as being very conflicted about what to do with his life and his relationships with others. He's a very human character and this moment of weakness was meant to be part of that.

That with his prayer in the final scene were really great moments and they played off of that scene of weakness

Nigger, they showed 15 year old girls' bare tits on TV anime back then. The difference now is that they purposefully leave them clothed in the broadcast to make people buy the BDs.
On a side note, I've never seen this movie the whole way through, I think I'll go do that now.
