It's how mature some episodes turn out, there are pretty basic episodes, especially in the first season. Second season for example it's all about parenthood and they explore different issues about it. And as the story progress, various characters become more interesting and less cliche.
It not about fancy magic tricks or fights, magic is more a tool that the girls use to solve common problems, it's more about the characters and how they grow.
