Beginner here, confused about the usage of "desu".
How do I know whether to use desu or not?
For example, I had to make "Do you understand?" into Jap, so I put "wakarimasu desu ka?", but it turns out the desu didn't need to be there. Wouldn't the "Do you" part require a desu to be used?
im using jfz

You don't put desu after a masu, since it's already polite.
If your sentence doesn't end in a masu-conjugated verb, you can put desu there.

Why did American's have to turn "Jap" into a racial slur? It's so much easier to say than "Japanese", and there's really no other way of shortening "Japanese", but because the burgerkings used it like "nigger" in WWII you can't use it.

>>142341245

>>
>>142340801
it's not nearly as bad as nigger though, because you're just calling them what they are, which is difficult to put into negative context when there's not very much that you can say is negative about them

nigger is as bad as it is because of what it cumulatively began to represent as time passed, which is generally why they have to keep switching words that represent black thug behavior i.e "youths"

older generations might find jap offensive because it represents their relationship during wartime, but I don't think anyone younger is even capable of caring, and if they do care, they're likely easily offended Americans anyway
>>
>>142340801
I find Nip works just as well and normies won't have the same kneejerk reaction as Jap may incite.
>>
>>142341245
It doesn't have to make sense.
Like calling black people "blacks" is just stating a completely objective fact. I mean you literally cannot go more black-and-white than that. Yet it pisses off a lot of people for some reason.
>>
>>142341284
I got some guy get mad at me for saying nip in a chatroom once. Not a Japanese guy of course. There are people who will get offended by anything short of 神様
>>
>>142341272

倭 - Yas
和 - Was
日本 - Nihs

"Jap" is the only one that doesn't sound like utter shit.

The more I learn about Japanese the more I hate it.

Just what the fuck are the nips thinking?
They seem to fucking use kana or kanji how they want, I've seen the same words written in katakana, hiragana or kanji, one time it's hiragana the next time katakana and so on.

I see foreign words in hiragana and japanese words written in katakana.

Fuck this shit.

Just as bad, that type of words that have 5 different meanings depending on the context and even then it's not 100% clear what's correct in that case.

Fuck it.

"People of colour" basically flips the term on its head and acts to exclude white people, whereas the older term "coloured people" was exclusionary against, well, coloured people.

Basically, they've taken a term that was racist against them, and made it into a new term which is racist against people other than them (i.e. white people) through a clever twist of language.

I'm a Person of Huge Cockitude, and I'll thank you all to check your privilege.

But seriously, I loathe euphemisms. They obscure information for no purpose at all. They are largely not even internally consistent.

The classic example is African American. A gut from visting the US from Haiti where his ancestors lived since the 1700s would be called an AA even though he has never even been to Africa and is not an American citizen. But Charlize (sp) Theron, born and raised in South Africa and now an American Citizen woukd never be called an AA. People would freak.

AA is a code word for "black", and everyone knows it.

What's a good way to learn mostly kanji and/or strictly kanji stuff?

I'm like those who, if you say a phrase loud, I can probably understand, but my reading is pretty lacking mostly due to kanji.

Tried flashcards, currently doing N3, going to N2 soon, but it's doesn't to be helping to read my h-mangos, I still see way too many words that I have no idea what they are, like this one recently: 視聴覚準備室 which I only knew it was "room" for something.

Reading those recommended novels are a pain when words like these appear, how do I fix this?

Do a kanji deck, that's probably the most efficient way.

I started reading manga and LNs for the first time only a month ago. Studied for 7 months before that doing a kanji deck and watching subbed cartoons.

He asked for the most efficient way to learn kanji. Anki is pretty efficient.
I'm not so arrogant to say my study method is the most efficient one that exists. The stuff I'm reading isn't anything too low level, though; it's not like I waited 7 months before crawling through Hanahira or Yotsuba or some shit.

I'm attempting to translate a short faerie tale from Nip to English. The TL;DR version of it up to this point is "Shichisan Pass was home of a massive pack of wolves. When the wolves lined up in procession it would stretch from one side of the mountain to the other. If a human tried to walk through the pass, countless wolves would follow behind them. A merchant attempted to pass through the mountain and was attacked. He climbed into a tree, but the wolves started making a ladder out of themselves to chase after him. The merchant hit the oldest wolf on the head, the wolf ladder broke, and the wolves crawled away. He was climbing down the mountain when he came across a house and begged the residents to stay the night. They obliged and as he was walking down the hall, he heard a pained noise in one of the other rooms. When he asked what it was, the owner said that his grandmother had fallen from a ladder and hit her head earlier in the day."
The last line is:
不審に思った商人がその部屋をのぞくと、頭に大けがをした先ほどの年老いた狼が、布団にもぐりこんでうなり声を上げていた。

のぞく was the first road block because I'm assuming it's meant in a way that he's ignoring the room and then the second was with the 布団にもぐりこんでうなり声を上げていた。 My grasp of grammar isn't strong enough to understand what's going on in that half of the line.

The story's 駟馳山峠の千匹狼 (The Thousand Wolves of Shichisan Pass) for the interested.
>>
>>142340782
If anything that should make it easier because of the lack of distractions. Everything you need to learn + anki works offline, so stock up on materials and you're good to go.

>politically correct bullshit

It's all in intent. If something is intended to be spiteful or disrespectful in nature, you have every right to be offended. If it's done with good nature or at least neutrality, or if it doesn't pass the straight face test, then getting offended is just being a self-centered drama whore. The latter is not bigotry.

I'm not going to barge into Japan and tell them to stop using 外人 because some people use it in a derogatory manner. You say that usually, it's just a casual shortening of 外国人? Fuck you, I know better than you do what the words that come out of your mouth are meant to convey!

And this is where the hypocritical, social ultra-authoritarian left who spit in the face of liberal ideals show off their intent to see to it that the classes of people who aren't protected by political correctness don't have any voice except that which agrees with them. No, you don't know what's going through my head better than I do. Why don't you listen to my explanation of what's going on in my head instead of deciding that your feelings are the only voice in the room worth listening to, or perhaps present some actual solid evidence that your claims are true (which will of course be scrutinized to see if it holds up, rather than the argument simply ending the moment that you begin to feel stupid, childish, or uncomfortable)

With Sakura gone, that makes you public enemy #1. But you are small fry compared to him - hell, you can even make okay posts occasionally; he was hellbent on destroying the thread. Sakura was a menace, you're only an annoyance.

You are indeed an annoyance, though.

A part of me wants to take up the mantle of donning a retard's facade to annoy you right back. I realize it would ultimately be a fruitless endeavor since it would shit up DJT and you wouldn't cease the "Jamal" persona anyway, but I do have the urge. Outside of imouto, you're the only one who has bothered to create a persistent identity through their posts - if I did it as well, then you wouldn't be quite special anymore. You'd have to vie for attention with me. I'd be interested in seeing what I would be dubbed by DJT.

Just to confirm because I've never encountered a scenario where the reading of kana is officially different from the writing as of yet, but, 独り can't be read as いちにん, correct?
I understand if you were to rewrite the kanji, they'd be the same, but my rikai dictionary is displaying 独り as both ひとり and いちにん. I assume it's just a mistake.
>>
>>142344123
https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/613684242

Anki's correct % isn't "retention", because it counts all answers, not just answers on "review" cards. In other words, new cards and cards you've already flunked for the day continue to affect correct %, but "true retention" ignores them.

Yeah most people are only about 4% higher in true retention. Some people are significantly lower, but that's pretty much just people with a large number of new cards, a large number of learning steps, and a very high retention. Or people with a large number of relearning steps that refuse to press "again" on lapsed cards unless it's the final step; those exist.

I know none of us can actually read Japanese, but I have to ask, as someone who's transitioned to watching their adorable chinese cartoons wthout subs, do you find the Japanese language beautiful?

I can't imagine getting to the point where I feel it can affect me the same way English can. It's possible I'll always just be translating quickly in my head, and feel too removed from the material to enjoy something, but regardless, I don't even think I'll ever actually appreciate the nuance enough to appreciate it on an aesthetic level, or whatever.

Do a radical deck if you're struggling. You can finish it in a week at 30 kanji a day. At only 15 a day it's doable in a fortnight. There's some info in the guide.

Even when I was younger and felt like crying because of some anime being overdramatically gay, I felt it was the subs that were helping, because it reminded me of literature - I actually rarely was moved in the same way with native language media, which is probably why I became such a weeab loser in the first place.

I wanted to learn Japanese partly to understand the appeal of Murakami's novels, which just seemed so dry and plain in English - as I'm learning, I'm beginning to suspect it might just be the nature of the language and have lost a little confidence in enjoying anything more than compelling content like mango and porn.

what kind of literature is it reminding you of if you've never been moved by native language media, chucklefuck?

anyway to answer your first question, I legitimately like the way the japanese grammar is laid out to express certain things
probably like it more than english, and though I haven't read much more than some manga volumes and the first 40 pages of an LN yet, I'm maybe at least halfway to where you might say I can "read japanese"
nuance behind language is 100% intuition so it really just depends on whether the language fits you or not

but I'm not a dirty fucking EOP, so although english is my native language, I never saw it as the one and only way to express emotion, in fact to me it probably developed as a less from-the-heart language because I would rarely speak it to my relatives in childhood

"translating in your head" is by the way literally impossible if you want to be comprehend any language in real time, or read more complex sentences, so you are forced to grow out of doing that fairly early in the process

also I think you're full of shit about being "moved" by goddamn english subtitles, that's putting way too much faith in the subbers' literary ability to carry the language over
I remember some ghibli movies affecting me intensely back in the day but you have to admit that there is much less leaning on the beauty of prose in an animation than there is on simple human emotion which you can easily interpret with your eyes
so while the subs were "helping" in whatever way they could, what you were really moved by was the rest of the content included in the medium, because obviously you weren't reading a book
I mean anime characters mostly say fairly basic phrases that don't take very much effort to translate, and in the case of source material with more nuanced prose, good luck finding anyone willing to adequately translate for free (see: jintai)
>>
Why does Yotsubato get recommended more than VNs like Flyable Heart when looking up words you don't know is so made so much easier in VNs compared to manga thanks to text hookers?
>>
>>142347669
>what kind of literature is it reminding you of if you've never been moved by native language media, chucklefuck?
Oh, there I just meant subbed versus dub anime (and native cartoons). Of course there's a lot more factors involved for why I prefer one over the other, but my point was just that it was a motivation that's fallen through a bit over the years. Didn't mean to make it sound like it applied to all types of media.

You're probably right though - it's just been in my mind lately that I enjoyed things more NOT knowing Japanese more than I do knowing some Japanese now. Just trying to figure out why. I could just be outgrowing anime, I suppose, or I'm looking back with rose-tinted glasses.
