Seriously, this is one of the things about Toriyama's work that has really always bugged me. Characters can never seem to be more than one thing at a time, you can either be a fighter OR a scholar (Gohan), you can be a martial artist OR a housewife (Videl).
Rationally there's no reason that both of them can't do both, people tend to have multiple facets to their lives all the time, work and hobbies, etc.
You get my point, the dude's characters tend to lack depth, Toriyama has always had this problem.

Toriyama usually drew Trunks with purple hair, like the anime. It's his Bulma that was different, with purple hair too.
However, recently he has changed to making both blue. The anime has been ignoring his coloring choices so far though, so it's odd if they suddenly make future Trunks have blue hair. That artwork is anime art though, so, yes, it suggests they'll give him blue hair.
