Jonathan or Johnny would be my picks, I would've picked Johnny but I picked Jon because he's underrated here. Joseph, Jotaro (as a protagonist) and Josuke are cardboard cutouts. Giorno and Jolyne are bland, and Josuke 2 hasn't finished yet. Jonathan is not the most original character archetype, I agree, but the problem with the other JoJos is that after you get over the initial novelty, there's not much to them. Josuke has a crazy haircut and a "hair" trigger temper, woah! And that's it for the whole part, no changes. Joseph can predict your lines and ruse his way anywhere, woah! And that's it for the whole part.
Also part 6 is probably Araki at his worst, when he was burnt out from JJBA (hence why the next one was seinen and originally not JJBA) with all kinds of problems. Complete lack of characterization and character design (ripping off fashion names and random runway models kek), plot that basically goes nowhere, villain with nonsensical motivation who "gets shit done" becaues lolfate and muh gravity, who is beaten by "fate" aka lazy writing... Pucci is superficially good because he spouts philosophy and "gets shit done" but really he's more like a proto-Funny Valentine in the sense that it was then that Araki started to write more complicated villains

The only character I'd say is more cut-out is Hermes but that's only because she got a really short amount of time, the crew was fucking entertaining and much better than part 3's.
As for part 6, how is refering to fashion designs a bad thing? There's literally no logic behind that point, part 6 was fashion-heavy as hell and that's it. The plot in the first half was slow but it STILL went somewhere, and the 2nd half the plot was on full wheels. There was a shit ton of characterization and antics in the group, more specifically though Jolyne, Anasui, Weather, FF and Emporio, moreso than the characters in parts 1, 2 and 3 who were literally just 1 trait tacked onto a character or memes.
There was literally nothing wrong with Pucci, of course I'd see him as a proto-valentine too but that isn't a bad thing. It was actually interesting to see the Joestars have fate AGAINST them for once, in all the previous parts the Joestars had luck on their side, yet in part 6 Jolyne and crew had to go up against literally all the havoc Pucci created for them. Pucci was fucking crazy but arguably had good ideals, he wanted what he believed was best for the people of the world through his meetings with Dio, he was a man who's ideals were so strong they carried him throughout the part, just like the Joestars. Just because he wasn't blatantly evil or wanted to destroy or takeover the world doesn't mean he had no characterization.

Kars just wanted to rule the world and become the ultimate lifeform because lolidk, Pucci actually wanted to do something that he believed was positive without realizing just how fucking badly it'd affect everyone else, he was an evil that never stopped to ponder that he was evil, he believed he was doing as much right as the Jojo's believed they did.
And sure Jolyne wasn't the best developed Jojo, I'd give that to Johnny hands down but she still had more character than "I must beat DIO's minions to save the world!" She started off as a brattish girl with daddy problems but quickly inherited the determination traits of Jotaro and followed Pucci through right until the end, building a strong comradeship with the people in the crew all the way up until the final point where she willingly sacrificed herself to save Emporio who in turn defeated Pucci. She was a fucking great Joestar, and part 6 is seriously nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be. It had some bad moments here and there but a lot less than parts 1, 2 and 3 and overall was a huge step up from those parts.
Really though, 7 > 4 > 5 = 6 > 3 > 2 >1.

Johnny Joestar is a star jockey who become a lonely cripple, okay. But he loses his arrogance and warms up to Gyro and the latter to him, trains himself in spin, finds his feet literally and metaphorically on something he believes in, and fights for a cause he is convinced is right. He has a character arc.
Anasui starts out as a random loon who for no apparent reason loves Jolyne and dies a random loon who for some reason loves Jolyne.
He has no character arc.

The fashion thing was just a part of a larger problem. While previously Araki would take an odd design (pompadour, long flowing coat, etc.) and work it into the character, he he just couldn't be fucked and googled "runway models" as a direct template for his characters in part 6. Why does Jotaro wear a long coat? Because he is a loner badass who harks back to Clint Eastwood and noir detectives who wore long coats. Why does Josuke have a pompadour? it's all explained. Why does Anasui wear whatever the fuck he wears? Why does FF look like that? Why does Weather? The point isn't that I dislike their specific fashion, the point is that their look lacks any character. It's fine for a villain of the week who captivates us for a moment then is gone, but this cannot work for main characters. In manga or comics or any visual medium, visual design is just as important as written and Araki gave up on this in Part 6.

I agree that the second half was better but that's not saying too much. There was a lot of plot development, which was a good thing, it's just that at that point I was hardly invested in the characters, the villains, etc. and just wanted it to end already. Joestars vs. fate was a nice idea, I agree, but it should've been expanded more on the whole, as when it just shows up at the end as an explanation for the villain's continued survival it feels a little cheap. Likewise I can see why Pucci's fans like him, I actually really love the "I commit evil out of the goodness of my heart" character trait and was really hopeful about having that expanded and explored up, instead we get Dio references every other line and a VERY convoluted final plan. If Dio had been removed from the story completely and the ultimate plan be a little simpler, Pucci would be better than Valentine (as Valentine is a similar "do bad for the sake of good" type villain). Unfortunately Araki botched his characterization with confusing motives and plans, and did not give him anywhere near enough screentime.

Kars being simpler actually makes him a more effective villain.
1. He has clear motivation.
2. He has a clear goal.
3. We see how he can achieve this goal, and how the heroes can stop him.
4. This sets the stage for anything the author wants, freely allowing him to develop the plot in any way and allowing us to compare and contrast the villains and the heroes. Of course you and I both know that Araki didn't really develop Kars much, but I'm just using him as an example that even a Saturday morning cartoon writer gets right.
Pucci has murky motivation, a literally unexplained-until-the-end goal, and I honestly didn't have a clue what the fuck he was doing for basically the whole thing. Kars wanted MacGuffin Stone because MacGuffin Stone = omnipotent organism. Fine. Pucci wanted Jotaro's memories... so he could read Dio's diary (what diary?)... so he could learn how to get to heaven (what is heaven, why get there, how does Dio know about it, why would Dio care?)... and was assisted by fate (why fate?) There's a lot of issues here as we can't get a proper narrative foothold to compare and contrast the bad guy vs. the good guys.

Dude, I didn't say Jotaro was well developed either. I concede that she did go from bratty girl to strong willed fighter, but like with the other JoJos bar Johnny, it happens very rapidly and is not really a gradual change that slowly develops through her interactions with other characters (as Johnny's does), but rather a "switch" that just happens where she goes "right, I have a Stand, I guess I'll fight now". She was quite heroic and a badass but to be fair, so is every JoJo thus far. so I wouldn't use that as a metric for judging them. Part 6 isn't completely awful but due to its self contained nature, Araki's own writing sabotaged him as he could not properly create a behind closed doors type drama, due to the bulk of his writing relying heavily on novelty and change. He had some good ideas which he managed to implement with much better success in SBR, but as it stands, I'd honestly say that Part 6 was Araki's low point.

Depends.
Each part has their own core cast, setting, and story. For example, part 1 is about Victorian era vampire hunting, part 5 is a mafia story which is basically X-men meets a crime drama, and part 7 is a spaghetti western with superpowers, etc.
Many enjoy some parts more than others, though there are recurring themes and concepts between parts, and older characters may pop up in later parts. Each part also has main characters all part of the same lineage.
I personally think Jojo dividing its story into parts makes it more interesting than other shounens. Each part has its own self-contained story and conclusion so it doesn't feel like it drags at all like other shounen manga, despite being one of the oldest.
But enough of my incessant blabbing. In short: yes. Go read it for yourself. You won't be disappointed.You also may or may not enjoy the series better if you are a fan of 80s-90s music.
