Well in KonoSuba's world devils are merely a type of demon that preys on human emotion, but technically speaking they are actually a bit closer to the original meaning of the term than the current one.
The word devil originates from the translation used from the original hebrew word "satan", in old English being "deofol", which comes from the late latin/greek "diabolos". The words themselves meaning something along the lines of "accuser" or "slanderer". A reference to satan's original role as being someone to tempt humans as a sort of test from God. The whole "personification of all evil" came from later interpretations.
