But think about it in another way: Why would Togashi waist his time with this fight if all he was going to do is kill Hisoka? Its not like this fight makes him any more likely to do things in the series. To be honest, if he wins, this fight was literally just fan service.
And, Chrollo dying effects more then just Gon's fight with Hisoka. It destroys the entire layout if the Troup, and allows other things to happen. Plus it brings Shalnark and Kortopi back into the mix, if nothing else

But the only way for Chrollo to remain alive from this point is through killing the clown, because this is a deathmatch. If your criteria for him having an affect on future arcs is "Oh, he's just alive", then by that same token, you can also apply this to Hisoka.

They're pretty clearly both damaged and the left eye isn't focused on anything, look at this scene where it keeps looking directly ahead of it while Gon is crouching.
