Yes, Plushfire was one of the most ridiculous cards ever since it had absolutely no restrictions, but the Performapal engine is really good, too. Skullcrobat, Monkeyboard and Sorcerer are easy plusses, and the Lizardraw/Guiturtle engine thins the deck of Performapals, giving you a higher chance to draw into Solemns.

It has. After 50 episodes in Synchro, we've finally gotten to know Yusho's whereabouts. The plot is slowly advancing, and the duels can only get better since the Lancers are slowly getting closer to fighting Academia.

And have you seen the plot? There's a reason why "Everybody hates Yuya"is an accurate foretelling as to how the plot treats him. He has more "failures" than he has successions and even when he succeeds, things end up going to shit within a span of 1-3 episodes cause pendulum theory.
Him trying to weasel knowledge out of Edo was not a bad move on his part considering his dad been gone for 3 years and this is the first clue in ever that he found. Any one who actually gives a fuck about their parents or special someone would strive to at least multi-task and get some indication from them.
If Yuya truly didn't give a shit about Academia or the state of Heartland, he would have canceled the duel and gone with Edo or focus his entire attention to finding him again rather than helping Shun & co or continuing to try and preach his ideals and stop the senseless carding between the two forces. I think there should be a middle ground and Reiji is ironically enough is how i would envision how they should be fighting. All protags are in danger of death nearly every episode. Yuya isn't special in that regard. He's special in how the plot handles him being in danger. He gets asspull saves from cards on the floor. Other protags had to work their way out of these situations with their own skill.

Judai had his friends all killed and killed his teacher
Yusei had friends die like Bruno
Yuma had nearly every single one of his friends die by the end of Zexal and had to fight his best friend to decide their fates and this is after having Astral ripped from him. Yuya hasn't been through shit yet.

It's normal to have this cycle where the protag gets kicked around a bit, and then he wins later, but Yuya seems to win later without a believable reason for why things should be so different the 2nd time around.
The cause isn't bad in of itself, but when I watched the city perform a full 180 during a city uprising that was being presented as a serious situation, because the plot demands that ladies and gentlemen needs to starting working now, my suspension of disbelief can only be stretched so far. Even for Yugioh.

That aside, having thought a little about it, I think a more convincing way to show that there had been progression in the Lancers' and Yuya's capabilities is to show them calming down the rebellion first off, and then having a duel with Jack after things were calm in the city to cinch that the Lancers are worthy. Rather than the Jack vs Yuya duel being the main factor that calms the city down for some nebulous reason, just for the sake of adding stakes or something like that to the duel. The way Shinji was shown all angry and then fist pumping for Yuya with barely a moment in between was laughable.

No, there was a lot of wild speculation generated at once, but the actual events in the show (while in Standard) weren't even near the HAPPENING moments that occur in several other anime of recent memory (with 1-2 exceptions like the first Shun vs Sora).
Pacing IS a part of the writing and its quality. And it isn't just a matter of it being slow or not 'by comparison', it was also about whether or not people feel like what they're watching actually matters to the narrative and has enough substance that's worth sticking around for.
