This is basically because the Imperial Army until 1944 always saw the Chinese nationalists, Chinese communists and Soviets as their main enemy. They only accepted reality that the West was the main threat reluctantly. So if you asked a Japanese everyman about the war, they'd talk wayy more about China then about the war with the Western powers.

That's kind of true. Japan didn't really have some vague term they described 'the enemy' as. If anything, those were communists. Although I do agree that they really wouldn't have been anything but loathing of the Americans, this is the same as they were basically to every nationality at the time.
