And to add to this, the relationship between Thorfinn and Canute, which did not exist at all in reality, is pretty much tailored for what I posted because each acts as a foil to the other prior to their reunion. One refuses to compromise to the point where he's punch drunk, but ends up using his fists anyways in the future, while the other murdered others because the ends justify the means however reeled it in good afterwards. The reunion balanced the two, which is how we have Paci-Fist right now. What really matters however is how each of them play out later on where Thorfinn aims too high while Canute is satisfied with too little. One sees too far ahead, the other the opposite. Both are adamant that their path is the right one however.
