Japan's weird pop musical scene has always been strange. I think a lot of it has to do with how their musical theatre developed. They got it second hand from America and England, and their own native styles of theatre occupied the space of the upper class entertainment. Although the West has build something of a temple around musical theatre, and while it has definitely evolved over the years into a meritable art form on its own, it was and is still primarily a mass art form rather than high art like classical theatre is. For Japan it was always mass and it was really never allowed a higher role. Every 200 years a single child with Yhwach's ability to share his soul and empower others is born. How The Almighty is related to it is currently unknown, but it is possible that soul distribution is a trait of the Almighty, thus making it so that the soul distro quincy does in fact have the almighty. There are hints throughout the manga that this quincy is Ichigo. So it's not confirmed if every 200 years such a Quincy was born. Ichigo is probably a special Quincy, but I think the special Quincy come in pairs of two, born 200 years apart. This period of his youth seems to have been fairly close in time to his imprisonment since we've seen how drastically and frequently shinigami can change appearance over short periods of time.
He was imprisoned in the Maggot's Nest at some point, presumably after the quincy extermiantion, not for any crimes but for posing a possible threat to the gotei and seireitei.
He was released at Urahara's behest 110 years ago. (given his lack of either shinigami robes or shino academy robes prior it's suggested this was the first time he officially became a shinigami. It follows he very possibly didn't have a zanpakutou before then since that would mean stealing it, and have pegged him for apprehension, like Zaraki, or required him to have recieved an asauchi through the academy meaning being a real shinigami recruit.)
In the next year (between release and Urahara's exile when Mayuri took over as 12th capt) he had to have obtained bankai, as only Zaraki has ever done so without a bankai.
He passed captaincy and took over 12th division and R&D as 2nd leader following Urahara's founding, meaning no one took control between them.

Maggot's Nest is an important part of his history because it means he never actually broke the law prior to that. Or at least not to any noticable or punishable degree. His given name, Mayuri isn't written in Kanji which is unusual, but it's also written in Katakana which suggests a few things.

This would normally be a bit of a stretch but he and Urahara both have Buddhist deities as bankai, and we now know that Nemu, a name simiarly written in katakana, was an abbreviation for Nemuri Nana-gou, "Sleeping No.7". Anyone think Yhwach is more something like a mid-boss? I used to believe Yhwach will be the final antagonist, barring the Soul King emerging from his dead husk, but the last few chapters makes me think someone else will be the enemy for the rest of the arc.
