It is highly unlikely that Goku benefited less by training with Gohan than by training with Trunks for a couple of reasons.
One, he had been training with Gohan for years already. That means no time is wasted on getting to know personal styles, examining each others weaknesses, and pushing themselves further to compensate.
Two, Goku knew the power potential of Gohan, and it very likely translated into him pushing as hard as he could. Remember that Goku opted NOT to go back into the chamber after Cell announced the Cell games, unlike Trunks and Vegeta. This is because Goku knew he had plateaued. It was going to take a tremendous incident for him to push past the next line, or simply YEARS of training (which he ironically had after he died)
Trunks, on the other hand, probably would have benefitted by training with Goku, but would not likely reach a level beyond what we saw from Goku in the cell games.

Piccolo was released by Pilaf because he was always BTFO by Goku. No Goku means Pilaf has no reason to release Piccolo.

Frieza only heard about the Dragon Balls because of Vegeta. Vegeta learned it because Piccolo talk about it to Radditz. Radditz came to Earth because of Goku.

But Earth and Namek would still be on Frieza's "Conquer and trade" list. But I doubt they'd learn about the Dragon Balls since they'd be too busy killing everyone first.

Goku wated a lot of time just to get Gohan to an acceptable level where they could train together. Trunks was already at that level and was a strong, experienced fighter.
