何か連絡することがありましたか電話なりファックスなりでお願いします。
Can it also be read as "If there was contact, phone or fax me"?

It supposedly is "If you have something you want to contact me about, phone or fax me."

In that case why isnt it 連絡したい

Can anyone help me with the second sentence? I assume the first means that as long as the objective is achieved feeling bad afterwards is fine. But for the second one I don't even know where to start. "If [Subject] started talking mid way through it wouldn't have an end"?
>>
>>142156197
once you're good enough to use a J-J dictionary do you really even need to bother with anki?
>>
>>142156197
I always used Daijirin and Daijisen. Both have good definitions and are available online.

That said, I think using a J-J vocab deck was about the worst study decision I made. It just takes so much longer to get through them. While you do get extra exposure, dictionary definitions are the opposite of compelling content.

J-J is great for learning words but inefficient for reviewing words you know.
>>
>>142157281
>good enough to use a J-J dictionary
You can do that as soon as you want to. Not like there's some point at which you'll know every word used in a word's definition.

>>
>>142157339
>It just takes so much longer to get through them. While you do get extra exposure, dictionary definitions are the opposite of compelling content.

Yeah, I usually just look at the example sentence I got the word from and only bother reading the J-J definition if a can't remember the meaning after that
>>
>>142157484
You can add dictionaries to Rikai and switch between them with shift + 1-9, although I've never added one myself. Not sure if you can use two dictionaries at once.
>>
>>142157416
Seems about right.
Are you making a deck with doujin imagery or something?
Because that would be pretty cool.
>>
>>142157476
Not baiting, just thinking out loud. A series I followed didn't get the last few chapters translated, so I've been reading through it manually by using Google Translate.

Makes me wish I knew Japanese, but on the other hand I'm not sure I'd actually use it much outside of the occasional manga or light novel series so it's hard to convince myself to commit.

Doujin Japanese is pretty easy to learn. Just google Realkana and learn the kana, then read Tae Kim's basic and essential grammar sections and download KanjiTomo. That's about all you need to have a decent grasp on what's happening. Shouldn't take more than 10 hours.

>何か連絡することがありましたか
My guess is that the use of past tense here is some lazy way to do 〜たら, so this part of the sentence resolves to "if there's ever an occasion for making contact or something"

Mostly speculah, but I see nobody else is biting at this point.

>>
>>142159433
does this even have "past" on it
>>
>>142156715
ある is very commonly used with こと in the sense that something exists that has to be done, this is also seen with its negative form ない

連絡することはない。
this would mean "you don't have to contact me"

何か連絡することがありました
"there was something you had to contact (me about)"
the fact that it's past tense here is similar to たら (or it could just be a transcription error, and it literally is たら), in that he's speaking from a perspective of somebody about to call him after it has already been hypothetically confirmed that there was something to contact him about, if that makes any sense, he is not referring to the actual present moment here

anyway I'm half sure you actually can put か here as a question marker and it works just fine, as a hypothetical question leading into a suggested course of action, but I might be tripping myself up with that

It's an online Anki and worth it if you're doing a separate kanji study as you can adjust the words to the kanji you know.

The quizzing makes the grind less boring than Anki but it has the big downside that you need to be online all the time to do something and the SRS is coded different so if you try something like 40 words a day in a couple weeks you'll be doing over 600-700 reps a day.

Also you can't import words as fast as with Anki and Rikaisama so...try it and see if it suits your tastes, otherwise go with the tried and proved Anki.

I'd say considerably more useful, since a lot of handwriting recognition software depends on it to look up kanji.
It also helps write faster and more legibly, and read shitty fonts and hardwriting, but I guess that's where cursive is somewhat useful too.
Granted, though, that literally everyone writes with proper kanji stroke order, cursive is comparatively more rare and so is probably still less useful even in those aspects.

The way Japanese schools work is often schools at different levels (such as middle and high school, or high school and college) are connected. If you go to the lower level and perform well you can get recommended to the higher level and get easy admittance, whereas people from other schools gotta fight their way in

The first couple days of reading Tonakoi I was reading for 30-60 minutes, but for the last ~3 weeks I've been reading about 5 minutes per day, and I don't see it getting any better. I need to find something I actually want to read, but it is hard because I don't even like reading in English.

After 2 VNs I'm already sick of high school and sex scenes.

Stop learning Japanese then. Japanese entertainment is all about high school life and there is no point in learning Japanese if you don't like Japanese entertainment.
>>
>>142169410
>After 2 VNs I'm already sick of high school and sex scenes.
Read something else, hey. Most erotic VNs are primarily smut, like erotic romance novels women slick themselves off to. Why not try something that isn't designed first and foremost to get your dick engaged before anything else?

>I need to find something I actually want to read, but it is hard because I don't even like reading in English.
Doubt you really don't like reading. What are you interested in? Even the lowest of lesser apes find themselves extensively reading up on their pet hobbies. Surely there has to be something you can be engrossed in for hours on end.

What about places like 4chan- do you spend a shit load of time here? Try replacing a chunk of that time with ふたば.

It's stupid enough to make me drop the entire program, because I feel like the developer is taunting me. Every other part of the GUI can be removed with a simple hotkey EXCEPT that one.

I don't remember why, but I thought that was a shitposter trolling me.

I've been considering White Album, Baldr Sky, or Cartagra, but Evenicle could be good too, so I'll add it to the list.

My Anki performance has been really shit lately, so I've been kind of bummed. That is probably more to blame for my lack of reading than Tonakoi is. I haven't even read it enough to know if I like it or not.

Holy fuck, I never realised how much vocabulary Dutch shared with English. I knew they were similar languages but I didn't expect that half the vocabulary was practically the same. That explains this picture.

I find that, aside from a few stupid mnemonics, I only really know the words I know because I drill them into my memory. Not every word has a clear translation. What you should do when learning new words is to treat them like words in English. Don't simply memorize the translations of each word but rather understand each word's meaning and treat the word as its own word.
