WAIT WHAT NO DAMMIT YEN PRESS

>it'll be ten years before Konosuba catches up
for fuck's sake
>>
It's fine, they don't have the rights to the fanfiction.
>>
>>142141665
You know sky isn't doing it anymore right?
>>
At least volume 9 of the fanfic will still be translated
>>
>>142141688
Vol. 9 and the Vanir spinoff is the last volume he's doing.

>>142141641
Don't exaggerate bud, its going to take three year for them to reach Vol. 9, which mean if they start releasing it next year, we'll catch up with the last fanfiction in 2020.

Of course by 2020, we'll still behind by six volume or so (+ spinoffs).

One thing that worries me is if they only release two volume per year and if they skip this spinoff.
>>
Why are they so slow?
Where I live it's common to quickly catch up. Sometimes they release a new volume every month.
>>
>>142142034
>Where I live
Singapore?
>>
>>142142103
Does it matter?
>>
Yen Press's speed is fine, 3 volumes a year is about how fast the original work gets written anyway. The real problem is that the translation is so overlocalized that it often reads like it was originally written in American English to begin with even though the setting is obviously Japanese, which just creates cognitive dissonance and makes it unpleasant to read.

>Blanket removing honorifics
>changing metric to imperial units
>inserting dank memes
>>
>>142142129
I'm just curious because as far as I'm aware even the official Chinese translations are not 1 volume per month fast.
>>
>>142142192
I may be confusing things. I'm mostly following manga. I guess those follow a different schedule from LNs, being less text heavy and all.
>>
>>142142175
>dank memes
When have they ever done this?
>>
>>142141641
You didn't have to make another thread you attention seeking faggot.

Either learn nip or fuck off.
>>
>>142142175
There's more than that, but until translators for LN start taking after the subbing community and just using the rips and fixing them to not suck dick instead of being boy scouts nothing will change.

>Reading an ongoing popular never ending LN
>Not seeing this coming

Literally your own fault.
>>
>>142142220
https://frogkun.com/2015/05/03/stay-away-from-the-no-game-no-life-english-novel/

It really seems to be a lottery what you get when it comes to Yen Press, because they have so many translators. So you may get

>SAO's translator who flows well and is accurate but changes metric units to imperial
>Danmachi's translator who leaves in random Japanese words for no reason,
>NGNL's translator who has bad grammar and memes
>Strike the Blood's translator who changes "Natsuki-chan" to "Natsuki" but leaves in "Senpai" and "Kojou-kun"
>Maou-sama's translator who is pretty much perfect
>Index's translators who don't want to offend Christians or Gulf War veterans
>>
>>142142490
>https://frogkun.com/2015/05/03/stay-away-from-the-no-game-no-life-english-novel/

Sounds like this translator is specifically aiming to appeal to weeaboos, and the grammar is inexcusable. I don't know what I expected but no game no life deserves better than this.
>>
the worst part is dmca and killing of fan translations
>>
>>142142635
>Sounds like this translator is specifically aiming to appeal to weeaboos
Isn't that what Yen Press haters want? They want the sentence structure and phrasing to be kept awkwardly Japanese and think a poorly edited JP->CN->EN reads better than Yen Press because it keeps "Asian idiosyncrasies".
>>
>>142142635
Ngnl sucks and is a rip off of mondaiji.
>>
>>142142490
You forgot the recent Overlord which turns a gorilla into a rabbit and some other things I forgot.
>>
>>142142669
>Manga gets localised
>Still gets fans translations
>LN's get localised
>LN's translators pussy out

Literally can't be blaming YP for this specifically.
>>
>>142142490
>Strike the Blood's translator who changes "Natsuki-chan" to "Natsuki" but leaves in "Senpai" and "Kojou-kun"
Sounds kind of like what Atlus does with Persona.

>Index's translators who don't want to offend Christians or Gulf War veterans
What?
>>
>>142142705
I was referring to the stuff left randomly untranslated for no reason.

>"Oh, my, how unlike you, my little imouto."

>"Hai, sou desu!"

Does anyone really like his stilted phrasing? That's a level of shit opinion beyond anything I've encountered in a while.
>>
>>142142705
Only when the latter gives you insight on context you'd miss with the former. Which depends on the series itself and how much that shit plays into the story.

Of course shills will defend YP by always saying X and Y don't matter, so ultimately it's subjective just like everything else in life cause if you sperg out hard enough no one can convince you the earth is round.

It's just a matter of accuracy vs sentence structure. Some people only care what's in the box, others care more for the packaging. Both have a point.
>>
>>142142743
They turned a lamprey into a rabbit. Perhaps they misread ウナギ as ウサギ and then didn't proofread.
>>
>>142142773
One of the YP Index volumes "translated" 'Gulf War' to 'Okinawan War' or something like that.
>>
>>142142835
Right, I wasn't paying too much attention, sifted through the threads, saw lots of bitching, and left.
>>
>>142142794
That was already explained though. Random Engrish in the original gets localized into random weeaboo Japanese in the translation.
>>
Don't read garbage LN's then it's simple really
>>
>>142142982

>Implying there is good LN's
>>
>>142142794
I'd only keep the desu if that character used it constantly like a quirky trait of theirs, but I don't really know the meaning of desu to begin with I just know it's practically a meme word.
>>
>>142142635
>no game no life deserves better than this.

You couldn't have worse taste.
>>
>>142142999
>he doesn't know
>>
>>142142981
The problem is that a Japanese person throwing in random English is not equivalent to an English person throwing in random Japanese. The former is to sound cool and smart and the person you're talking to has a good chance of understanding what you're saying, the latter just sounds sad and just confuses the listener. Spanish or French would work better.
>>
>>142143002

It doesn't really mean anything on it's own it's basically just there to make the sentence a statement.

The more you know.
>>
>>142142981
That seems odd. Does using random english carry the same connotations for japanese as random japanese does for us?
>>
>>142143089
this is wrong.
>>
>>142143150

Then what's right then?
>>
>>142143133
>random Engrish
Sounds cool and vaguely try-hard.

>random Wapanese
Sounds cringy and, at least among certain groups, funny.
>>
>>142143133
No, because most Japanese people will have learned some English and using it makes you sound cool, while using random Japanese just makes you sound like a weeaboo and nobody will understand you. For Persona 3, Atlus localized Mitsuru's random English as French so she would sound cultured instead of Japanese which would sound subcultured.
>>
>>142143088
>Spanish or French would work better.
Depending on how neckbeardy the speaker, German.
>>
>>142143089
Then just keep it. I agree with >>142143088
in that the alternative proposed is poor, but that doesn't mean the YP method is any good either. I don't know if Spanish or French is the answer, but losing context is always a no no.

Some people undermine the importance of word play, and I guess if the series is shallow you could get away with it but I think it's more of a matter of principle.
>>
>>142143184
>>142143220
That's what I thought, and that's why I felt that leaving random japanese stranded mid sentence was an attempt to appeal to weeaboos.
>>
>>142143184
>>142143133
English is also a required part of the Japanese school curriculum (even if most students forget everything the moment they graduate) and modern Japanese is filled with a metric ton of English loanwords.

Knowing fluent English in Japan will make you seem cultured and worldly. Using random Engrish is a failed attempt at that.

Whereas knowing Japanese outside of Japan is a sure sign of being a massive weeaboo. Because, come on, what else would you learn it for. "I-I'm actually interested in the historical cultures and cuisine of Japa-" yeah no fuck off.
>>
>>142142034
>Sometimes they release a new volume every month.
market saturation
>>
>>142143266
>Because, come on, what else would you learn it for.

A friend of mine works in sales for a japanese electronics company. He still has a power level level but he doesn't show it unnecessarily.
>>
>>142143226
German only sounds cool in a military or espionage context.
>>
>>142143266
>Because, come on, what else would you learn it for. "I-I'm actually interested in the historical cultures and cuisine of Japa-" yeah no fuck off.

Nope, use it so I can order normalfag stuff, though these days it's getting less and less necessary since those companies branched out overseas.

But you'd be surprised at how the equivalent of GAP there, has cheap ass jackets with designs more technologically advanced than GEOX, at least for summer wear that is, let alone stuff like TODO.
>>
>>142143345
And sustainability. With Haruhi ended and Spice and Wolf recently ended they really need a handful of reliable successful long runners to keep them alive.
>>
>>142142490
>Index's translators who don't want to offend Christians or Gulf War veterans

Are you retarded? The Gulf War thing was just a mistranslation by a Japanese translator who doesn't know fuck all about history from outside his own country. They took him off the project after that volume. Doesn't matter since it was an offhand comment that has nothing to do with the plot.

The word Kamachi uses for Christians literally translates into Crossism. The anime is translated the same way. Switching Orthodox and Catholic for Romans and Russians was Kamachi's preference and meant to remind people it isn't real life.

Being an autist is bad for your health.
>>
How to kill good LN
>Find an LN with a decent fanbase and an active fan translation project, preferably the one that got pretty far into the source
>License it and use legal threats to kill fan translation and any hosting mirrors
>Spend years crawling through the material everyone already read ages ago and couldn't care less to pay money for
>By the time you get to the new material nobody even remembers that the series existed at all
>Drop it due to low sales, bonus points if you do it at exactly the same place where fan translation stopped
>C&D any fans trying to pick it up where you left it cause muh license
>>
>>142143394
>But you'd be surprised at how the equivalent of GAP there, has cheap ass jackets with designs more technologically advanced than GEOX, at least for summer wear that is, let alone stuff like TODO.
If you're talking about Uniqlo, just call it fucking Uniqlo. It's a worldwide brand now, people know what it is.
>>
>>142143524
>Bullshit the post

Your translators are the only reason you aren't getting translations. Legal threats are easily avoidable.

YP like one of the only ones who've never actually dropped something after a few volumes officially.
>>
Do they not have translation groups and trackers for mangas?

I don't understand how this is such a big deal.
>>
>>142143524
Tokyopop variant:
>allow the copyright holder to push three shitty series nobody ever heard of on you in the process
>>
>>142141641
Doesn't really matter when the anime is far better than the LN.
>>
So are Yen Press's projects good, in general? If so, there's no real problem - you just have to wait a little for more translations, and actually pay for the books.
>>
>>142143659
No, they're not worth the paper they're printed on.
>>
Fuck all these whack LN's, how long until the hard cover baccano volumes?
>>
>>142143776
This. They all cry " we dont force anyone to pay donations!" but will do nothing if you do not give money. Only a few translators really care and tell you from the start to just buy the books instead.
>>
>>142142175
I will take that over some translations I've read, dear god there are some out there that make your skin crawl.

>—Your haha has been found.

>After Vali was sheltered by the Grigori, Vali’s chichi had immediately erased his haha’s memories and discarded her. Only now, after many twists and turns, she had begun her second life in a small rural town, far from the city. …Vali recalled the times when he lived together with his haha. That was when he was subjected to the abuse of his own sofu and chichi. Haha had always come forth to protect him. However, haha only had the body of a human; she had given birth to him due to his chichi’s frivolity, his sofu was also the son of the Maou, hence various elements overlapped, and his haha was always powerless.

Its a decent enough translation but HAHAHAHAHA.
>>
>>142143914
Danmachii's TL is only half good. There are some terms/names that could be fixed.
>>
>>142143540
Wasn't thinking of Uniqlo, but actually that one works too, their jackets are slightly different though, and it's a pros and cons thing. But they don't sell those overseas yet nips delay their shit like crazy.
>>
>>142143659
>wait a little
A few years you mean, by which time you won't give a fuck about the series because your taste changed or you forgot about it at all.

And for me personally any NA publisher licensing something means I'll never hear of it ever again cause
>the world outside of NA doesn't exist
>>
>>142144261
That would be true if fan translation never existed and you didn't know about the LN or read it before it got licensed.

>>
>>142144484

>>
>>142143266
>Whereas knowing Japanese outside of Japan is a sure sign of being a massive weeaboo.
>Because, come on, what else would you learn it for.
Maybe your country is near and has extensive trade with japan. you're right about the weeaboo part, though
>>
>>142145228
Neat, didn't know 'nam was that high up the list. Not SEA though.
I'd argue we're even more weeaboo. Our shibuya ripoff has its own loli mascot and the local post office just held an art competition for its own.

I'd give more examples since it's impossible to overstate how weeaboo things are, but we're going into blogshit territory, so here's a sage for that.

Ehh I bought all the hardcover Haruhi Novels, All the Spice and Wolf novels and so far volume 1 of Overlord.

All have been good. The only issue I ever had was vol 1 of Spice and Wolf not coming with the original cover but that got sorted out and I got a new copy to fix that.

People complain their illegal translations get stopped are pretty funny. Translators that don't care about money would still translate things and put it on mediafire or something. Its the attention whores who need recognition on their twitter accounts or websites that stop translating.

Tayor Engel's alright, but they really need more editors and proofreaders. Accidentally turning Michitaka's level from 90 to 19 (Serara's level from volume 1's character page) is pretty inexcusable. Still not as bad as the Chinese official translation, which turned volume 8 Serara into Tohya.

Also wish that YP used footnotes or notes at the end of volumes for wordplays and things that won't translate from Japanese to English. It's been done for manga, nobody's going to die from reading a little extra explanation.

And you don't need N1 to read most LNs, you can and should start reading stuff a lot earlier.

Months ago if you posted anything pro-Trump outside of /r/The_Donald, your post would get voted down very quickly, or you might even get banned for hate speech or other stupid shit. Now however, those posts are often up voted and rising to the top in areas like /r/politics. Reddit in general has experienced a major culture shift towards right/nationalist beliefs.

I'd argue that outside of /r/The_Donald (who are basically just /pol/ crossboarders) this is more due to anti-Hillary sentiment than pro-Trump. You won't hear the average redditor agree with the right on climate change and renewable energy, for example.

How shitty translation works, you mean.
Translation should retain the meaning while making it palatable to American English audiences. Removing honorifics destroys the meaning and leaving them in (with a TL note at the beginning to explain them) is far superior.

>>
>>142162571
You wait 3 years to read what you've read 6 years beforehand?
>>
It is entirely possible to take out honorifics from a Japanese script and still convey the same meaning. It's just a pain in the ass, and unless you have full knowledge of the work you can get completely screwed.

For example, take Konosuba. Up until the end of volume 6, honorifics basically don't mean shit. They're a useful way of identifying who's speaking, I guess ("hey this person is oddly formal, it's probably Yunyun"), but there's nothing you couldn't replace with some proper word choice. But then at the tail end of V6, Kazuma suddenly starts thinking about Chris' use of honorifics, and that's how he comes to the conclusion she's actually Eris. This... still isn't /impossible/ to do without honorifics, but unless you were either in direct communication with the author or literally psychic, there's no way you'd have known to keep that in mind while translating all of Eris/Chris' previous dialogue.

Sometimes it's better to be safe than sorry, and it's not like it detracts that much from the experience. Honorifics aren't even unique to Japan, may as well expose more people to the idea.
