It could work, but it'd be really interesting if the focus wasn't primarily on the two mains. The main draw of the show would just be who those heroes were and how badly they react to reintegrating, given their life experiences. Imagine the hell that would ensue from them taking a kid back from an Ima Soku ni Iru Boku-type world or accidentally bringing back a literal reincarnation because the soul signatures matched.
