Why is this anime considered the saddest anime?
The structure is pretty obvious and there are a lot of hints given by everybody to the obvious.
Story is standard boys meet girl and girl helps him rediscover the joy of (previous activity he abandoned).
The ending is something to be expected by teenagers and so the final letter happen and it's revealed what was the lie in april.
Sure it was emotional, but not the saddest.

It's not that widely considered the saddest, though if this was the first sad anime you ever watched, you'd probably carry it around with you for a while. Yeah, it's a little trite, sure, the characters aren't a stroke of genius, but I'm not sure it's anywhere near offensively bad by any means.
Just figure that anyone who would be so deeply touched would probably also get all bent out of shape at the idea that it wasn't the best thing ever. If you put yourself in their shoes, you might understand why there's even anyone at all making that sort of claim, even if that doesn't change the reality of things.
