I think the most defining aspect of this season is that Luluco is so much better than Kiznaiver. There's still some really great shows in the less popular genres such as Flying Witch, Sansha Sanyou, and Anne Happy, but all of the big name stuff seems to be underwhelming. JoJo is exactly what we expect it to be, BnHA is a poor adaption of a pretty basic manga. Mayoiga is a train wreck with silly characters, which is exactly what anyone with foresight expected. Kabaneri is SnK scrapings repackaged for sale by the same team that shipped SnK, because who better to be able to improve the formula a bit than those most intimate with the failings of that work. There's a lot of decent stuff going around this season, but all of the big surprises are coming from the fringes.

BnHA is a great manga that translated to anime as shit. Mayoiga would have been better if they focused on the characters instead of just being weird. Kiznaiver is just boring. Kabaneri I just don't like don't even know why. Flying Witch and Luluco are the only things I really like so far.

Kabaneri cleaned up a lot of the problems in SnK, but it didn't actually cut them out. It's just a better version of that same type of concept. The fused colony is an even worse sign than Ikoma becoming part "enemy" as a way of powering him up. The entire linchpin of SnK falling off a cliff was the MC becoming a titankin. Although, it will be hilarious if the season ends with Mumei becoming a fused colony allied with humans just because that would be so perfectly opposite of what should be done. I have more faith in them than that for the moment.

It established pretty well in that episode that the fused colony is mindless and greedy; its only goal is to acquire more bodies to add to its mass.

Those are contradictory assertions. Greed is a characteristic, in the same way that those other kabane attained fighting technique. That doesn't matter though, I was just coming up with the worst case scenario for where they could take the show. There are bits of evidence for more intelligent kabane, the kabaneri are already even more unique special snowflakes, the fused colony heart was a female, Mumei keeps worrying about turning completely; shake all that up and pick the dumbest outcome. Thinking about it that way also points to why SnK became worse and worse so rapidly once that process became the overriding design principle.

Beyond all the technicalities for including that as a comparison, that show would be "AOTS" in most seasons. It's not that Luluco is the most amazing thing ever, but everything else has such obvious flaws that the sloppy, fun side project feels like the most exciting show. It's for the same reason that Tonkatsu DJ Agetarou is getting so much attention. By all accounts this is a really good season, but there is an air of staleness to it.

I think this season is really fucking great with its niche stuff but the supposedly 'popular' hype shows are not really that good. The fact that there are people considering Re:Zero to be AotS shows how bad this season in terms of its popular genres.
