Not really. A manga's popularity in Japan correlates only weakly to its popularity on /a/. He was good when he was introduced. He found Ishida's bike in a field and brought it back to him. He was also genuinely friendly to Ishida, even if he came out a little strong. But it becomes more and more apparent that he's never had friends, and he comes across as annoying. He's clingy, jealous, and self-centered. I don't think the readers of the manga really gave a shit about the movie subplot because of him, when it was supposed to be a touching moment near the end. He just kept forcing it over and over, making it feel out of place. If the movie came about naturally and progressed naturally before the big bridge fight, it would have felt a lot better to see it at the end.
