Happened to me a season ago while watching Luck & Logic. At first i thought it would be totky harem shit but the furst episodes focused more on world building and MC is not a beta beginner but an actual veteran. And each member of the team seemed to have its own story alongside their respective god companions with none of the girls showing any deep interest in MC except for growing trust on him as a leader.
Then suddenly everyone started having crushes on him and i dropped the series like a hot potato. What a waste.

OreImo at least left its premise intact, but it definitely had an inferior second season on account of everyone falling in love with the MC our of nowhere.
SAO forgot everything that made it bearable in the first place and transformed into possibly the most disappointing battle harem of all time.
