So I watched it with a friend on skype and writing down almost eveything that was happening, but then it started going full nonsense.
I've watched some youtube videos explaining the ending but still, the animation was pretty bad and they made it too hard to understand.

7.5/10. It could have been a great story, but the characters just didn't feel like people and they tried to cram as much weird shit in there as they could. I think it would have worked better as a manga, as the 13-episode format kind of fucked it up.

Sure, his opinion on Lain might not mean much but since his scope is so narrow he probably knows his way around mecha really well.
Compare that to someone on /a/ who has seen 2 or 3x as many anime but the genres are so scattered it's just the top handful of most popular from each. If you tried to ask him for his opinion on anything he's essentially going to give you the same answer that leddit or MAL would. Jack of all trades vs master of one argument.
it's a cerebral show that requires reflection on unlike most anime
it doesn't really have a place in modern times because people take in so much media that they don't have time to process and genuinely think on thinks in the abstract, especially the /a/ crowd
