Musashi is musing about how the building can be standing, from what I can tell of the Japanese script underneath. Skyscrapers couldn't be built in his time because of different construction methods - he says something about how it's perfectly straight-up. He didn't literally destroy the building, he's imagining what it would look like if it collapsed under its weight (or so it appears) from the four top corners down. Maybe this is Itagaki's way of sneakily showing off his beliefs about 9/11. Fairly sure Musashi is also guessing Gaia's age, when he's saying '15-16' something.

Since this is pretty much a pure dialogue chapter, I'll see about TLing it when senmanga gets their shit together (in 2 days). I do hope Gaia does something awesome to Musashi, instead of being just another pointless victim. The gun could have made that happen. Maybe he has another gun. Gaia having learned gun kata? I think that'd be bretty alright.

did you all forget that he had like a 6 hour Q&A with Tokugawa and the scientists
he knows there's more of a world out there than just Japan, China and Portugal; he consciously chose to say what he said instead of just "foreigner" or something
>>
>>141906373
I love this brand of stylized ambiguity though.

My favorite example were the GPS signals shifting when Oliva smashed Che into the ground. Coupled with Che making a point of attacking with the power of the Earth, it was as if Oliva managed to shift the whole planet by a few meters with his raw strength.

After a second you realize it's because they're being tracked by satellites and this was set up ahead of time, but it makes the imagery of what was a simple resolution to a fight very powerful.
>>
>>141914967
The scientists were all Japanese, weren't they? Why would Musashi assume generic foreigners would look like the Portuguese (White) instead of like Asians (e.g. the Chinese).

Why would he assume *anyone* in modern day Japan is or isn't Japanese? Payne is speaking perfect Japanese to him, and Musashi bluntly claims that he doesn't understand his language. Top right.
>>
>>141915475

How much would modern Japanese differ from the one spoken during the time of Musashi?
>>
>>141915475
>Why would he assume *anyone* in modern day Japan is or isn't Japanese?

If the Portuguese are the only Whites he's ever seen he's likely to consider traits specific to Whites in general as specific to the Portuguese in particular.

Other far foreigners might well look like green ayy lmaos as far as he's concerned.

Plus, could the current word for the Portuguese have been more generic when it was first used (I don't speak Japanese)? I know the current Slav word for Germans basically means "foreigner".
>>
>>141915536
Depends on who you asked and where you lived. Ultimately, this Musashi pretty much just speaks normal present-Modern Japanese with a few older words/phrases thrown in for flavor. It's pretty much the equivalent of someone using "thee" and "New-Worlder" instead of "you" and "American". Even though you don't use those words ever, your brain doesn't have to separately process it.

>Plus, could the current word for the Portuguese have been more generic when it was first used
He uses an old word with racist connotations that originated from China. Means "southern barbarian". It was later re-purposed to apply to the Portuguese, with mildly less offensive connotations. The Japanese did not quite like the Portuguese.
>>
>>141916175
Seems quite generic then, like the Slavic "nemtsy" (foreigners in general but mostly Germans) or the Arabic "ajam" (foreigners in general but mostly Persians).

They held onto this sort of attitude well into modern times though. Even in the 19th century they considered the Japanese spirit and civilization superior, with Western technology just being accidentally superior and to be appropriated by their betters (the Wakon Yousai concept).

That Musashi is perfectly reasonable in assuming white foreigners without the traits the Red Hairs were named for are Portuguese.

All the other foreigners he is likely to be aware of (e.g. the Korean or Chinese) are Asiatic.

Hopefully someone that isn't as "obvious" in style as Musashi. Maybe the fighters will concede that they're weaker than weapon users if Motobe ends up killing Musashi, and Motobe will become the next boss. Reviving the first Hanmas might be weird - I'd much rather just have Yuichiro back.

Kaku should be the one to get the killing blow on Musashi: use the sucker punch he got off on Motobe as a Chekhov's Gun for when Motobe's losing ground in his fight against Musashi; have Kaku just pop up and remove Musashi's spine with a hyposthenic grab. And yes, Baki did beat Retsu, but he's not representing any national martial art like the other two.
>>
>>141924535
>I'm personally hoping for cyborgs.
Or aliens, time travelers from the future or demons. It's funny how anything from DBZ would fit.

Aside from that, revived Hanma ancestors and/or more clones of historical fighters like Musashi.
>>
>>141924762
The fact that Che and Oliva are even in the running for strongest speaks to the idea that Itagaki is *not* trying to be nationalistic. They're just two random guys from terrible places.
>>
>>141924876
Isn't Che actually Japanese and Wild Fag rewrote the "translation" to make him the real life guy? I seem to remember that's how it went.
>>
>>141924876
Retsu also beat Katsumi quite easily and made a point about "muh 3000 years old chink martial arts" hell.

If we were to name the strongest characters int he series only Musashi is actually Japanese.

>Retsu
>Kaku
>Pickle
>Yujiro
>Baki
>Jack
>Oliva
None of them are fully Japanese nor do they practice a japanese martial art.
>>
>>141924762
It reminds me of the tournament arc in Garouden. People from various different countries representing their own martial arts got beaten by the Japanese who used Karate and wrestling.

I don't mind him being nationalistic, there's just no variety. We know what's going to happen most of the time.
>>
>>141924762
There's no doubt he is very nationalistic, and there is nothing wrong with it. Although it can be annoying at times it's refreshing from all the self hating coming from comics.

They did butcher the translation to an inhuman extent, but he is still clearly supposed to be Che Guevara.
>Jun Gebaru

I'm also 99% sure he's still not from Japan, but I have no ground on which to say that. Gonna look in the raws. If anybody knows what volume and/or chapter his backstory is in (the bit with him as a sailor), tell me; it'll make this a lot faster. It probably says where he's from on this page, but the text is too small for me to read most of it so I'm not going to try.

Jack is a "pit-fighter", a term that means nothing in context.

You can argue that karate isn't Japanese because Ryukyu and Okinawa weren't really integrated into the state until recent history.

idk about Shibukawa, make your own argument.
>>
>>141925300
I did mention Jack and don't think Doppo or Shibukawa can beat anyone on that list.

I think he might be, seeing as he can dislocate the guys wrists without touching them, but then again, in the later half things got a bit out of control, especially with the toughness of the fighters.

Shibukawa was able to out-wrist Musashi, so I think he can still take Oliva.

That being said, Doppo, Shibukawa and Retsu were essentially all on the same level. That doesn't mean they'd all each individually win against a specific person, but it's unfair to say that Doppo couldn't possibly fight Jack or something.

Wasn't Katsumi hyped as better than Doppo during the tournament? This is before Retsu one-shotted him. I'd put Retsu a tier above the other two, I can't see a fight between him and Doppo going much differently.

I would have announced it had Dear Leader said anything... our dropbox hasn't been changed or updated, so idk what the deal is. Chapter 257 is also out on there, yay. Enjoy the stuff, friends.

>Wasn't Katsumi hyped as better than Doppo during the tournament?
He was, and then Doppo realized how retarded Katsumi was. He'd never put Katsumi in a 'match' situation before; I guess he didn't know how Katsumi would behave. Regardless, I don't consider Katsumi to be equal to Doppo and friends - in particular because of what Shibukawa said to Doppo in *their* fight, and also because he's missing a fucking arm.

Found exactly what I was looking for: Baki calling him Iron Michael. What I didn't find: someone actually calling him Ian. The next time someone refers to him (and he's not physically there) as Michael, Wild Fang put it as McGregor. In at least 5 places now where they wrote "Ian" or "McGregor", it just says Michael. I think he flat-out might just be called Iron Michael, and we've been getting fucked for however long.

So his name is read as "Jun Gebaru", as I said before: nobody knows how it's written or the kanji for sure, but the Jun part is 'surely' derived from junsui; meaning 'pure', or 'true'. Reference point for readers: when Yuujiro says that Musashi lacks purity, he uses the word jundo, which is 'purity'. They share a root.

However, in English, he's not called Jun. He goes by "Jei" Gebaru - the 'Jei' pronounced and written as the letter "J". No reason is given for this change whatsoever, so it's pretty obvious he's supposed to be Che. He's a third-generation immigrant; called 'sansei' (google it), meaning that only his grandparents were born in Japan. His parents were born somewhere in South America, and so was he. No location beyond "South America" is ever specified, ignore it all. He's 21 when we meet him in the story, oddly enough. Wild Fang lied about that too; dunno what the fuck. The island isn't called "La Serna"; it's not given a name. Like half of the scripts of these chapters are made up, I dunno why. He had a turning point when he was *17*; wanted to create his own independent nation. He was trained *only* by his grandfather, who put him in a special advanced program. The people of his island didn't think he was too young; they just didn't trust him. "Bush" is "Bosshu". Fucking I don't care anymore, I'm done writing this. You get the idea; Wild Fang is retarded, ask me if you want to know anything specific. Last point I'm going to make is pic related: It's literally written as Che here. I don't know, fuck it, whatever.

I've been asked to join some competitions, specially for MMA lately as I'm quite fast for my build (I'm 1.85m and 92kg), but I've never been interested in the sports part of martial arts, for me it's an inner thing, I compete with myself first and foremost.

But I spar almost every training season with lots of dudes, but I have a problem, I'm too big for anyone on my gym or nearby gyms, everyone else is always 70kg or less, with some guys nearing 80kg with my stature, and don't let manga fool you, a 10kg difference is abysmal in a real world match.
>>
>>141939634
I used to get bullied by kids much older and heavier than I. I know what you mean. I had to make it up with speed though.
Although this particular point makes me think about how humans survived against other humans and creatures bigger or heavier than them.

Our bodies are quite fragile and inefficient right?
>>
>>141939788
>Our bodies are quite fragile and inefficient right?

that's because we are smart, we can create tactics and use weak points to overcome the physical limitations, and the same goes with fighting. This is why technique and form are important, but without a minimal physical performance to carry it out it won't hold.

I'd say that, in my experience, brute strength trumps technique if that technique does not come with force too, but the combination of having rte strength and technique stays above always, and in equal conditions for both fighters (equal strength and technique), what makes the difference is cunning.

Also I want to clarify, a person with bigger muscles is not "slower" than someone with a slimmer build, in fact the top speed for someone with bigger muscles is much higher, the problem is that the acceleration is slower because of the greater mass to move, but once the muscles are warm and on the right "gear" a person with bigger back, torso and arms will throw about 1/3 more punches per minute than a person of the same stature and less muscle mass, also having way more stamina considering they spend more energy.
>>
>>141940160
>, also having way more stamina considering they spend more energy.
You mean less stamina?

I've wanted to learn martial arts and get stronk so I could fight with viking like guys. But it sucks to know that height and mass matter to such a large extent. Even though I'm six feet I get sad.
>>
>>141940394
No I said it right, a guy with more muscles can throw faster punches and for a longer time than a guy with less muscles, they they have both trained well.

6 feet it's like 1.80m right? You can build up to 85-87kg of muscle though martial arts and low-weight training and have great stamina, speed and strength. The important thing is to build the muscle though lots and lots of repetitions instead of lifting, because that way you rain both the techniques and your body at the same time, and create the reflex to react without thinking.

And no matter what the morns in /fit/ say, running is a MUST for any good martial artist, in that regard, even if exaggerated, baki and ippo's trainings got somehow the right of it.

Also if you want to start training martial arts, it doesn't matter which discipline you get into, the important thing is that the teacher is good.

Not that anon, but does body weight training help?I don't want to start bulking but i'd rather be lean.Started doing push-ups,pull-ups , and lots of reps with the kettle bells to the point that i have reached couple thousand reps of each a day for the past months.

I'm currently unemployed and with a lesion, so I'm here all day every day lurking for baki threads or creating them if I'm bored (until my lesion heals or I get called for a job) so, yeah, I guess I'll be here.
>>
>>141941099
keep at it, body weight training is good, and even some lifting if it's not too much weight, I mean for that kind of build it's better to do 50 curl reps with 2kg than do 3 with 30kg.

Also you can do something alike what cross fitters do, and that is manage the resting times, do series of reps with less and less resting time between them.

Another great thing and a training I like a lot is with elastic ropes, tie them to a wall or a gym bar and then to your waist, arms and legs, even to your head if you want to do neck training and do normal exercises or techniques with the opposition from the elastic band.

In addition you can do the typical boxers training, go for a run, about 20-30 min then stop and to body weight training on the spot, then run some more, some more body weight training and end it up with some 1-2 min sprints at full speed, then walk a while to relax your cardiac rhythm and then stretch. Always stretch before and after doing serious training, stretching is the key for a lean and fast body.

I usually do series of 25 reps with 8kg kettlebells, alternating between each hand and then taking a short 1 min-30 sec break between each series of 100 and usually keep it up for 30 to 45 minutes.

> do series of reps with less and less resting time between them.
I have also started this at first i would need to take a 10 minute break between eachof series of 100 pushups but now that my body has gained more stamina i usually only need a one minute break to get my breath back.

>Another great thing and a training I like a lot is with elastic ropes, tie them to a wall or a gym bar and then to your waist, arms and legs, even to your head if you want to do neck training and do normal exercises or techniques with the opposition from the elastic band.

This actually sounds pretty good, i will probably go and buy an elastic rope and try it,i will also try to mix it up with more running too, thanks anon.

it takes time, also to expand more on the management of resting imes.

The idea is to try to go a little above your current limits. so now your limit is 100 push ups non stop right? Then you can try this:

-25 pushups as fast as you can
-1 min rest
-40 pushups at normal rate
-1 min rest
25 push ups as fast as you can
-45 seconds rest
-30 pushups at normal rate
-30 secs of rest
15 push ups as fast as you can

rest until you catch your breath and repeat, add series always adding some extra series with les reps but shorter rest times when approaching the end of the exercise.

Instead o reps you can also set up times like 1 min doing pushups 1.5 min rest, 2 min doing pushups 1 min rest etc.

And yeah, the elastic band training is really great, when you end it after doing a series of kata or some series of forms you feel really really light.

On the diet front I have made adjustments over the years but I haven't changed it too much, the only rules I have are:

Strong breakfast: For breakfast I have sunflower seeds bread loafs with triturated tomato, a little of salt, olive oil and some kind of cold meat.

Eat variety: I eat vegetables, potatoes, pasta, legumes, meat, chicken, fish, etc, whatever I like, but I always try to eat something different each day.

For lunch I don't take seconds, I eat what's on my plate, so I make sure I always serve myself enough, but no seconds.

Never eat between eating hours, but do 5 meals a day, with the strong ones being the lunch and breakfast.

And for last, I don't eat cabs after 6 pm, as I'm not going to burn that energy on the day, so I have light dinners of fruit, salads, etc.

Been doing this even since long before I started training so it's not related to it, but I think it's a great complement.

Yeah the list you gave me actually seems that it could increase my stamina i will actually try that today. For how long you suggest this workout to be since in a workout i usually do 10 series of 100 non stop push-ups with a 1 min break between them?

i feel like throwing up looking at this manga, lol

do it until you can't catch your breath and your arms hurt, then do it once more.

But don't focus too much on a single kind of exercise or yo'll kill the muscle fibers with over stress, look for other arm exercises and mix it up, with pullsups, curls, static exercises, and so on.

A great exercise for your forearms is to hold your arms straight and open and close your fist really fast, and change the position of your arms every 10-15 (cross shape, over your head, full straight) reps, and keep at it until you can barely open and close your fingers.

Implants probably.

If I'm not mistaken Pickle tore off just his skin. It's more surprising he's still healthy despite the heavy drug use. How many years has he been taking them?

Has it even passed more than a year in-manga time ever since the tournament finished if i recall correctly it was mentioned that Baki was still 19 when fighting Yujiro.
>>
>>141943420
I think you're right. If Jack is ever dying I expect hearth failure or something.
>>
>>141943420
one year passed from the fight of baki and yujiro and dou so from the start of the manga I think only about 2.5 or maybe 3 years have passed.

according to (real world) physics, speed IS power

I'm sure the top tiers are faster than that, they can just tank the forces involved unlike Katsumi
