Also Maki is about the most boring and uninspired of all characters. Her back story with Ruru was bland and melodramatic.

You know how Okada said she was originally prepared to write some sort of battle show, but they told her to make it a character drama instead? It feels like the 'pain' premise is a hangover from the original idea and is now completely redundant.
It has quite literally devolved to 'they all get a shock when one of them feels bad, they either remark wistfully on it or use it to locate the sad person somehow' and in this episode had next to zero plot significance. Maki's arc is the best thing the show's done so far, but you could put it in a different show entirely while changing almost nothing.
It's like they don't really have a story to tell about this premise, and instead are just telling individual drama stories with it as the arbitrary reason the characters are obligated to each other. There has so far been very little attempt made to think of how '7 people who can all feel each other's pain' could create unique dramatic situations or affect these guys' teenage angst in unique ways. (Which is weird because holy shit, that level of quasi-telepathy could transform your life.) A concept like this could be making huge and potent points about the power of empathy, but so far it's just made a few diddly ones nested inside 'yay friendship'.
It's not bad but it screams squandered potential.

The first impression of archetypal characters proved to be false because they have pretty great diverse personalities and the character development has been great
