It wasn't just the animation. The new director admitted that she was a fan of the original anime and you can see that. I hate to sound pretentious but the old director didn't manage to capture thespiritof the old anime.
My guess is that he wasn't too familiar with the 90s anime and because of his work on Precure he didn't want too much of an overlap with it and tried to give the show more of a focus on romance and a more serious vibe to further diverge it from Precure. The problem is that Sailor Moon's plot and romance is nothing to write home about, especially in the first two arcs.
Then there's just the plain bad writing and oversight. Never mind the embarrassment that was the whole Four Generals "arc", a scene from the manga would sometimes be changed but because they forgot to accommodate for that change later on, you'd be left wondering what's going on i.e: Usagi not being rendered crazy looking for the Silver Crystal yet still collapsing from apparent shoujo exhaustion as a result of that later on in the episode.

Yeah you can tell the new director is putting passion into what she's doing compared to the old one.
As a sailor moon fan, its easy to spot another one and she definitely seems like a genuine fan of the series. You can tell she likes all versions of the story and tried to incorporate it into this new season and it works out very well.
And yes I agree, the romance in the first two arcs do get grating after a while, and it was pretty awful that they tried to put so much emphasis on it that they forgot the reason people enjoyed sailor moon, which was for the friendships between the characters, and their struggles with growing and adapting to their responsibilities.
And oh god, that Shittenou/Senshi romance plot they did was so badly written and all around awful. It's the reason I dropped out of the first two seasons of crystal. I'd much prefer them dying off like they did in the manga, no matter how much I love Zoisite.

The only part I agree with you is that the previous director messed up by trying to hard to make Crystal not like Precure, which is bad because Sailor Moon is a precursor to Precure. And by focusing on avoiding being like Precure he failed to capture the very spirit of Sailor Moon.
To make matters worse he also wanted to avoid being like the '99 series which just made things worse since Ikuhara had a good understanding of the essence of the manga. So we were left with a soulless adaptation that just didn't feel like the Sailor Moon manga it was supposed to adhere to.

It was a lot of fun and very enjoyable. It's pretty much it's own thing plot wise... It takes various things from the manga, anime and even the original Sera Myus.
They change Venus' character to be more of a loner who is already an idol... and Mercury is much more self conscious of her friendship with Usagi which causes her to get brain washed by the Dark Kingdom instead of Mamoru.
Honestly, I really felt like PGSM did certain things with the characters far better than the anime or manga. Especially with Mamoru and Usagi's relationship, it had a nice realistic growth from: I sorta find you annoying to I'm starting to like you into love. And this is all before they figure out about the Moon Kingdom stuff. I always hated that about the original anime, cause they never had an nice romantic moments that made their relationship not feel obligated. And the manga just moves too quickly to have any slow growth with them.
I HIGHLY suggest it; it had its cheesy and bad acting moments, but its worth it in the end.

PGSM is surprisingly decent, but it takes a while for the actors to get into their groove/for you to grow accustomed to the subpar acting. The SoL has a lot of goofy hijinks, the characters all have great characterizations with little twists here and there from their original incarnations and the character interaction is very nice.
It also does a mix and match with interesting elements in Sailor Moon that only appeared later on, like Venus having traits of the Outer Senshi, Luna having traits of Chibi-Usa, Super Sailor Moon, etc. so just seeing the new analogs is interesting.

I'm really enjoying the original show. I'm watching the dub (which I'm sure is sacrilege here) but I just like the English voices, particularly Usagi/Serena's. Going to stay well away from dubbed Crystal though, sounds nasty.

In manga at the beginning of Galaxia arc she going back to the future but coming back in the final battle to aid Eternal Sailor Moon fighting Galaxia.
She even bring the amazones (now as a Sailor Soldiers) to help.

Seriously, I've never seen anime do classic tragedy better. Sailor Moon is at its best when it takes itself seriously, it's just the weak writing, development and characterization that makes Crystal (and the manga) such garbage.

This is a completely irrelevant detail that doesn't matter. I don't know how you'd complain about the anime adaptation of the arc, yet also hate that it just specifically doesn't do this particular thing.

That's the problem. They had the opportunity to make the first two seasons fantastic, given how important they are and how much focus they get through the various adaptation, but they chose not to do this and just let everything be sloppy as hell. The later seasons work well for what they are, but the first season is the meatiest part of Sailor Moon by far.

Great, but yeah, people here will shit all over you for it. Enjoying DiC Sailor Moon is perfectly fine, as long as you recognize that it's basically a completely different show from the original.

Serena's first voice is excellent, and you're more than right to prefer her to her Japanese actress. I don't think anyone else has played her with that kind of energy better than that or made her spaz out scenes work as well. Having said that, while some of the characters are done better in the dub, the the Japanese has a far wider variety of interesting characters overall.

DiC pulled off many musical themes well, but the dub soundtrack gets overbearing and repetitive fr more quickly and and up leaking the variety of moods the Japanese has, even if certain themes and song sections make select episodes more enjoyable.

The whole anime is basically completely different, all the characters are different people with different personalities, everything is rewritten, certain villains are replaced 'the negaverse' (which is the weirdest aspect of the dub by far) and most episodes are re-edited to show different scenes in different orders, with scenes from later or earlier episodes being frequently edited in different places. The whole thing is remade to feel like a Canadian Saturday morning cartoon. Like I said, it can be quite fun to watch in the right mindset, but you shouldn't be ignorant of what the show is like in Japanese.Image related isn't shown in the old dub, sadly.

Yes I do like it, but I've read ahead that the voice actress changes over the course of the show. First is the best, second is nice but the third really falls off the rails from what I've heard. I'm not looking forward to that one.
And yeah, I understand how it's different. The 'Saturday morning cartoon' feeling is actually the feeling I'm looking for as I enjoyed watching dubbed Pokemon and DBZ when I was younger and I suspect they were similarly edited to 'westernize' them. I'm fine with that, just like I was fine with death being replaced by the shadow realm in Yugioh. But I'll give the Japanese version a shot at some point too.

Yeah, I was about to mention that, as it really is a big deal. The first cour is the most enjoyable part of the dub mainly for this reason (though I think she also comes back for Jupiter's intro episode). I really don't care for the actresses that come after her and it really robs the dub of what would otherwise make it stand out positively.
I completely forgot to mention the 'Sailor Says' parts, though there's not much I need to say about those.
