The problem is the world of HxH is very political and the Chimer Ants were invading initially a supposedly demilitarized zone, and then the equivalent of North Korea. You don't just nuke a country and then tell people (it was giant bugs) Doing so let's more people know that there are crazy things out there and begs the question of "where did they come from". The nuke was just the exemple of that, it killed far more people than them and yet the majority of countries refused to get rid of them and instead opted for the equivalent of the cold war. Unless you're willing to argue that nukes aren't a bad thing, it's a pretty objective truth.
What happened in CA was just a battle between two species for dominance and survival, and even if the ants never really stood a chance you can't really call the humans evil for using any means necessary.

HXH isn't about the political quagmire of International Nuclear Warfare, its about the fact the Hunter Organization got no focus because every single hunter is a insane egoist.
Every part of the ant treat can be summed up as:
1. Hunter Organization is in actual shambles for fighting war
2. None of the members really care about the organization, outside of the benefits it gives
3. Netero could have soloed the fucking Ants before Mereum got strong
4. Netero could have had a A class hunter team blitz the ants before it got serious
5. Instead of solving the problem, Netero decided to send a bunch of apprentices alongside a B ranker, to thin out the herd. He then farmed ants to get back into shape, forcing Meruem to take over the capital by blocking of one geographical direction, and then decided to have a Nuke as a backup in case he fucked up

Sure, but the V5 do and they hired the HA to take out the Chimera Ants. That's a thing even now, the HA doesn't want to go to the Dark Continent but their hands are tied both politically (V6) and personally (Their orders form Netero)

If not nuclear war then strained international tensions and maintaining secrecy. It's still a political quagmire otherwise they would have just bombed the original hive and been done with it. But since the NGL was a political demilitarized zone and East Gorteau is North Korea they had to bother with infiltration and back room deals with corrupt politicians.

Kite and Co showed up before the ants were recognized as a greater threat so they really don't count. And Knuckle and Shoot were qualified to handle the threat insofar as the queen was related. Once the Royal guard started being created a larger number of skilled hunters would have been needed but since they were either uninterested or not hired the situation persisted.
Point 1 makes 4 impossible since those hunters that may have had combat skills necessary to take out the ants weren't interested or weren't hired by Pariston who handled contracts and assignments; not Netero.
