Even disregarding the ratings its been getting, the manga volumes sell well and have been consistently in Top 10 (merc has been selling good too from what I hear).

Also the manga is kinda divisive to me. The 'fun' side of it I find unique and refreshing but the 'serious' side I find is pulling every tired cliche from the books and spewing them onto the pages. I can honestly say I'd prefer it if Baku and IceFireEmo took a backseat to any of the other characters in class A.

I imagine it's the whole guns being rare in Japan thing. Despite the fact that in this world any random asshole could have the ability to shoot lasers from his eyes or emit ionizing radiation or uh, have a hand that is literally a gun.
The thing that amuses me is that even the villains kinda "play" at being villains. Outside of Shiggy to a certain degree no one has really shown proper sociopathic/psychopathic/violent tendencies as they would happen in real life. Well, maybe Toga but she hasn't gotten to do much.
The villains like these really dramatic full-scale attacks and politely pairing off to fight the students and pros and cleverly announce themselves when they ambush people. Instead of uh, just attacking them when they're asleep at home. Or going to/from school. Or attacking their families. That's not cool enough- villains are flashy and shit!
Like who would really think to keep trying to convince Bakugou to turn traitor after he tells you to fuck off and die on the first try? Why would you think that turning him would somehow be worse than just fucking killing him and nailing his corpse to UA's gate the next morning? If you turn him that looks bad for UA I guess but that's a fucking complicated issue- UA doesn't do psyche tests. You could say he had always been a bad egg, or that he was brainwashed, or blackmailed, or whatever- and you could always "rescue" him later.
You fuckin' kill him and no one can take it back. He can't be rescued, and I'd think the press would freak out a bit more about a dead kid than a kid turning full edgelord.
The answer is that it's a shounen and not seinen but whatever I'm drunk and autistic and possibly a sociopath because all I was thinking reading the whole Bakugou interrogation thing was "Give me like a gun and a list of the kids addresses and I'll have UA shut down in a week"
