I actually liked a lot that development. For the first part of the series she was like the only solid figure inside that utterly messed up crew of children.
Viewers got used to put their hopes on her expecting her to solve the various shit that were going to happen.
And then she broke apart turning out to be just as weak as everyone else.
That's when you knew that there wasn't really going to be any hero that would set things right. That's when you knew that things could only degenerate more and more, and they did.
